# Cosatu says the death of children due to contaminated food is becoming a weekly occurrence
# And golf: Scheffler, Schauffele and McIlroy are nominated as the PGA Tour Player of the Year
# The EFF has accused Parliament of acting unlawfully by rejecting the independent panel’s recommendation to investigate president Cyril Ramaphosa over the Phala Phala scandal. EFF members gathered at Mary Fitzgerald Square for a march to the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg, where the party’s case against the decision is being heard. The EFF’s legal counsel, Kameel Premhid, told the court the report shows evidence suggesting Ramaphosa had a case to answer regarding the millions of dollar stolen from his farm in Limpopo:
# Cosatu is calling for more protection of children under siege from food poisoning. Over 20 children have died after consuming food bought from local spaza shops, with the latest case being the death of an eight-year-old girl from Soweto. Nearly 900 foodborne illness cases have been reported across the country. Cosatu’s Zanele Sabela says it is unacceptable that the death of children due to contaminated food is becoming a weekly occurrence:
Meanwhile, the City of Tshwane has activated its Disaster Operations Centre in response to these cases. The centre has been activated at Level 2, enabling a multi-sectoral response to manage and mitigate the crisis effectively. The metro says the centre will ensure swift action to inspect spaza shops, confiscate hazardous substances and enforce compliance with municipal health and safety regulations.
# Golf: Americans Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland will fight it out to be named PGA Tour Player of the Year. Among the nominees for PGA Rookie of the Year are Americans Nick Dunlap, Jake Knapp and Max Greyserman, as well as Frenchman Matthieu Pavon. PGA Tour members will vote for the recipients of the Jack Nicklaus Award as the best player, and the Arnold Palmer Award as Rookie of the year. The winners will be announced by the end of the year.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-9-cents and the euro at 19-rand-2-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-75-cents and Bitcoin trades at 93-thousand-14-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-628-dollars-79-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-11-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Disney’s newest cruise ship, the Treasure, is introducing new features with a surge in new cruise passengers. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, there were a total of 31.7 million cruise passengers worldwide in 2023, almost seven-percent more than the last pre-pandemic year, 2019. On the Treasure, Disney fans will find the first cruise ship bar themed to a Disney ride, the Haunted Mansion, while the lounge has an aquarium with a special effect. Treasure will make its maiden voyage next month.
