# The GOOD Party has called for a Western Cape provincial crime summit to address alleged ties between gang bosses and officials. This follows a debate on recent mass shootings in Bishop Lavis, Atlantis and Khayelitsha. GOOD’s Brett Herron said figures like Mark Lifman allegedly use political connections to shield criminal networks. He urged government to convene a summit to find solutions to escalating gang violence:
Meanwhile, Parliament’s portfolio committee on Police plans to assess the efforts of the police service in combating extortion against measurable outcomes. Last month, Police minister Senzo Mchunu revealed that the Organised Crime Investigations within the Detective and Forensic Services has investigated 312 extortion cases, involving gangs targeting small businesses, since April last year. Speaking to News24 and the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the committee’s chairperson, Ian Cameron, criticised the police’s extortion strategy, calling it ineffective.
# The DA in Johannesburg says Eskom has decided to enforce load-shedding on the city due to the municipality’s failure to settle its account of 6.3-billion-rand. The DA’s Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku says the party is extremely concerned about the impact on lives of residents and businesses that this avoidable load-shedding will have. She says they are deeply disturbed over the allegations of a systemic capture, and mismanagement at City Power:
# The National Consumer Commission has reported a surge in complaints from consumers buying used vehicles with undisclosed defects. On average the commission is receiving about 250 to 300 complaints from people who bought second-hand vehicles. The commission’s spokesperson, Phetho Ntaba, told Newzroom Afrika that some of the complaints include consumers not being given information about the car or experiencing defects within a short period:
# Cricket: West Indies bowler Alzarri Joseph was banned for two matches after he stormed off the field during the final one-day match against England in Bridgetown on Wednesday. He was unhappy with his captain, Shai Hope, and left the field before returning shortly afterwards to bowl his next over. Cricket West Indies says Joseph was found guilty of conduct falling short of their standards of professionalism. He apologised to Hope, his teammates and management, explaining his passion got the best of him.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-49-cents and the euro at 18-rand-84-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-65-cents and Bitcoin trades at 76-thousand-56-dollars-10-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-686-dollars-84-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-51-cents a barrel.
