# Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi says new water security measures have been introduced to address water issues in the province. The plan focuses on upgrading infrastructure, improving water management, and enhancing resource monitoring. Addressing the media, Lesufi said the provincial government aims to secure water availability and enhance service delivery as the province deals with growing demand due to population growth and climate change:
# Eastern Cape police are searching for suspects involved in the fatal shooting of AbaThembu chief iNkosi Nogcinile Mtirara at Mqhekezweni Great Place in Mthatha. The motive for the shooting is still unknown. In another incident, five matric learners were reportedly raped in Bityi, Mthatha. Police spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa says they had been staying in a rented house while preparing for their exams when they were assaulted:
# China has condemned curbs finalised this week by the United States on investment in sensitive technology, adding that it reserves the right to take its own measures. The new rules announced by the Treasury will prohibit US-headquartered firms, citizens, and permanent residents from engaging in transactions involving cutting-edge technology with China. Stemming from an executive order signed last August by US president Joe Biden, the restrictions will take effect on 2 January, targeting investments in the fields of semiconductors, artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
# Cricket: South African captain Aiden Markram declared on 575 for six after the visitors’ third century in the first innings of the second Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram. Wiaan Mulder scored his maiden century on the second afternoon after Tony de Zorzi contributed 177, and Tristan Stubbs 106. Mulder and Senuran Muthusamy built an undefeated seventh-wicket partnership of 152 runs, with Muthusamy scoring 70. Taijul Islam took five wickets. Bangladesh slumped to 38 for four at stumps.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-55-cents and the euro at 19-rand-3-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-81-cents and Bitcoin trades at 72-thousand-508-dollars-51-cents.
