# Former EFF secretary-general Godrich Gardee has urged members considering leaving the party to disclose if they are being recruited by another party. This follows the resignation of former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu, who joined the MK Party. Gardee states that silence is complicity, and emphasises that this is a critical moment for the EFF. He warns that the party must pass this test to survive beyond its ten-year milestone.
# The case against a 17-year-old charged with the murder of Overberg High School learner Deveney Nel has been postponed to 18 September. The teen appeared at the Caledon Magistrate’s Court this morning after being arrested on Friday evening. Deveney’s body was found in a school storeroom earlier this month, prompting community outrage. The Overberg District community has welcomed the swift arrest and is now calling for increased safety measures in schools to prevent more such tragedies.
# Western Cape MEC of Agriculture, Economic Development, and Tourism, Ivan Meyer, has emphasised the critical role of the port of Cape Town in the province’s ambitious economic growth plans. During a meeting with Transnet’s port of Cape Town management, he highlighted the port as a key export hub essential for achieving the province’s goals of tripling exports and creating jobs:
# Cricket: The Proteas improved their chances in the World Test Championship when they clinched the two-Test series against the Windies. South Africa beat the hosts by 40 runs in the second Test in Guyana after the first one rained out. Proteas coach Shukri Conrad says the incentive of reaching next year’s final of the championship definitely played a role, but they realise hard work still lies ahead. South Africa is currently fifth in the championship standings behind India, Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-78-cents and the euro at 19-rand-62-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-4-cents and Bitcoin trades at 58-thousand-62-dollars-38-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-496-dollars-47-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 78-dollars-75-cent a barrel.
# And, SweepSouth says inflation and the broader cost-of-living crisis are taking an immense financial and mental toll on South Africa’s domestic workers. Findings of a survey produced by the online home service platform, show 83-percent of domestic workers are the sole providers of financial support to their families. SweepSouth’s Luke Kannemeyer says financial insecurity is also widespread, with 75-percent of respondents unable to save money monthly:
