# President Cyril Ramaphosa will this evening address the nation on the government’s management approach to illegal migration and the recent surge in protests against foreign nationals. Anti-immigration organisers threatened to initiate a nationwide shutdown if the government failed to remove undocumented foreigners. The organisers had set a deadline of June 30 for undocumented immigrants to leave the country. During the Cabinet media briefing on Friday, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni indicated there will be no shutdown as anti-illegal immigration protests continue in the country.
Meanwhile, the Department of Employment and Labour maintains that South Africans are not xenophobic, framing the ongoing nationwide protests as grievances regarding illegal immigration. The department’s spokesperson, Teboho Thejane says the country has a group of formations that are protesting the presence of these foreigners in the country. They are accused of contributing to crime, impacting the health system, and being available for ready exploitation by unprincipled employers:
Cosatu and its affiliates, the National Union of Mineworkers and the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union however, are calling on government to fortify border management and immigration systems. Cosatu spokesperson, Zanele Sabela says this is to ensure that only appropriately documented foreign nationals are granted entry, residence and work in the country. She says the destruction of property, threats, assaults, harassment and all acts of violence targeting migrant workers and foreign nationals are unacceptable:
# Eskom has announced that average unplanned outages declined to nine-thousand-252-megawatts in a week. Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mowena says this is a significant reduction of five-thousand-655-megawatss from the 14-thousand-907-megawatts recorded over the same period last year, equivalent to more than the nominal capacity of Kusile Power Station. She says this improvement is also reflected in the unplanned capacity loss factor, which improved to 19.57-percent from 30.76-percent in the corresponding period last year, representing a reduction of 11.19-percent:
Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus named an exciting 51-man squad featuring 21 uncapped players for the team’s first training camp of the season, starting on Monday, and aimed at the selection of a Springbok and SA ‘A’ team for the season-opening double-header in Gqeberha on 20 June against the Barbarians and Zimbabwe. He said it will be beneficial in the long term as they build the squad, looking forward to next year’s Rugby World Cup and beyond. According to Erasmus there is an good mix of experienced campaigners and young players in the squad.
# And motorsport: World championship leading teenager Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable run of successes on Saturday by claiming pole position for Mercedes ahead of four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull for Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix. The Ferraris of Lewis seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Charles Leclerc are on the second row of the grid. After four wins, Antonelli will be seeking to become the first Italian to win five consecutive races since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat for Ferrari in 1952.
