# And soccer: Nottingham Forest sacks its manager just three games into the new season
# Following marginal growth of 0,1-percent in the first quarter of 2025, the gross domestic product strengthened by 0,8-percent in the second quarter from April to June. Manufacturing, mining and trade led growth on the supply side of the economy. The expenditure side was also positive, lifted mainly by stronger household consumption and softer imports.
# State-owned digital distributor, Sentech, has warned it will switch off the SABC’s signal by December if the broadcaster fails to settle its one-billion-rand debt. The SABC wants to renegotiate signal costs, while delays in passing the SABC Bill to create a new funding model add to the crisis. The chairperson of Parliament’s Communications committee, Khusela Diko, says urgent intervention is needed to save the SABC from collapsing and secure jobs and community broadcasting:
# Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt for suspects responsible for a shooting that claimed the lives of two women and a nine-year-old girl in Gqeberha last night. Spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa says police were summoned to a shooting incident at Malibale Street, Soweto on Sea in Kwazakele. Mawisa says residents heard gunshots being fired and alerted police after they found the bodies:
Moving abroad:
# The Global Sumud Flotilla says its vessel, the ‘Family Boat’, was struck by a suspected drone off Tunisia’s Sidi Bou Said port today. All six on board, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, were unharmed. Tunisian authorities have dismissed the claims, saying a fire broke out, caused by ignited life jackets. The flotilla says the vessel was struck in Tunisian waters, causing damage to the main deck. The initiative, supported by activists from 44 countries, including South Africa, vowed to continue its mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
# Soccer: English Premier League side Nottingham Forest had sacked manager Nuno Espirito Santo after 21 months in charge and just three games into the new season. The Portuguese, who signed a new three-year deal in June, last month admitted that his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had deteriorated. Nuno led Forest to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season, earning European League qualification for the first time in 30 years. Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is a contender for the role.
