BULLETIN 6 July 1 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The government condemns foreign nationals being blocked from healthcare
# Minister Gwarube says she is building a future for learners
# And Elon Musk forms the ‘America Party”
# The government has condemned certain groups and communities for blocking foreign nationals from accessing healthcare services at public facilities. Government acting spokesperson, Nomonde Mnukwa, says illegal immigration will never be condoned in the country. However, while the genuine frustrations of many citizens are understood, taking the law into one’s own hands is unacceptable and undermines the values enshrined in South Africa’s democratic Constitution:
# The minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, says her ministry is building a future where every learner gets the quality education they deserve. Gwarube says that after she was appointed as minister of Basic Education, she stopped a 10-billion-rand tender that threatened school nutrition, eradicated 96-percent of identified pit toilets, and pushed foundational learning to new heights. The minister says the department will continue to transform South Africa’s education system:
# The GOOD Party says the recent flooding across Cape Town has once again exposed systemic issues in the City’s infrastructure maintenance, particularly the stormwater drainage network. GOOD, Siyabulela Mamkeli says, while heavy rainfall affects all areas, its consequences are disproportionately severe in townships, informal settlements, and the Cape Flats, where infrastructure is less robust and housing is more vulnerable:
# Thousands of people gathered in India’s Dharamshala on Sunday to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama. The gathering marked the culmination of a days-long celebration in the small city that has served as the spiritual leader and Nobel Peace laureate’s home since he fled Tibet during a failed 1959 uprising against Chinese communist rule. In a video message to religious elders on Wednesday, the Dalai Lama announced that he will have a successor after his death and affirmed that his office has the “sole authority” to recognise his future reincarnation.
# Tennis: Novak Djokovic recorded his 100th win at Wimbledon with a dominant victory over Serbian Davis Cup team-mate Miomir Kecmanovic and remains on course for a record 25th Grand Slam title. Djokovic’s 100 wins put him behind only Roger Federer’s 105 victories in the men’s game and nine-time winner Martina Navratilova’s record of 120. Djokovic faces Australian 11th seed Alex de Minaur in the fourth round. He will likely have to beat both the world’s top two players, Jannik Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, if he is to lift the trophy on July 13.
# The world’s richest man says he has created a new political party, the America Party. Elon Musk made the announcement just one day after president Donald Trump signed a tax-cut and spending bill into law on Friday, which Musk had fiercely opposed. The Tesla boss backed Trump’s election campaign with more than a quarter-of-a-billion-dollars. He criticised key parts of Trump’s legislative agenda after leaving his high-profile role at the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk later slammed the bill as a disgusting abomination, with Trump saying he would even consider deporting the billionaire.
