# President Cyril Ramaphosa has departed for Kananaskis, Canada, to attend the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit. Ramaphosa will hold bilateral talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and a second meeting with US president Donald Trump. The summit focuses on energy security, innovation, and strengthening mineral supply chains. Ramaphosa aims to align G7 efforts with South Africa’s G20 Presidency, seeking global cooperation on energy solutions and infrastructure investment.
# The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union has condemned Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube for releasing guidelines on the Bela Act, calling her actions unlawful and unconstitutional. SADTU spokesperson Nomusa Cembi says only regulations, not guidelines, are permitted under the Act and accuses Gwarube of political interference. She says the union has demanded the retraction of the guidelines:
# Water and Sanitation Department has dismissed social media claims that the Mthatha Dam caused recent flooding due to opened sluice gates. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, head of Specialist Unit-Dam Safety, Wally Ramokopa, emphasised that the dam has no such gates. Ramokopa confirmed the overflow was natural and added that flooding was worsened by the Qaqoqa River. He urged residents to avoid building near riverbanks and flood-prone areas for safety:
# Build One South Africa says its proposed Employment Equity Act amendment bans employers from using past pay slips to set salaries. Party leader Mmusi Maimane says this entrenches wage inequality and locks workers in low-income cycles. He calls for transparency and fair job advertising. Maimane argues the move boosts dignity and economic participation, especially for women and youth, by disrupting unfair benchmarking and promoting just, equitable pay in the job market:
# Local health authorities say Israeli fire and airstrikes killed at least 12 Palestinians today across the enclave. At least five of them occurred near two aid sites operated by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Medics at Al-Awda Hospital in the central Gaza Strip said at least three people were killed and dozens wounded by Israeli fire as they tried to approach a GHF site near the Netzarim corridor. Two others were killed en route to another aid site in Rafah in the south. The Israeli military was not available for comment.
# And cricket: It is one all in the series of three ODI tests between South Africa and the West Indies after the Proteas women yesterday won the second test by 40 runs at the Cave Hill Oval in Barbados. There were contributions down the South African batting order to put up 309 for 9, led by Sune Luus’ 76 off just 65 balls. Nondumiso Shangase produced a career-best 55 in the number three position for only the second time ever. In reply, the Windies managed 269, all out. The final and deciding test will be on Tuesday.
