# The US Chamber of Commerce says South Africa’s G20 presidency represents a landmark moment for Africa’s role in shaping the global economic and policy agenda. South Africa assumed the presidency on Sunday, becoming the first African country to lead the G20 since its creation. The president of the chamber’s US-Africa Business Centre, Kendra Gaither, says South Africa’s leadership comes at a critical time as businesses and governments alike seek solutions to pressing global challenges, including sustainable economic growth.
# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has called for constructive dialogue among education leaders regarding the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act, urging them to avoid public attacks. He criticised recent comments by deputy president Paul Mashatile and Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane against Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube, following her engagement with Solidarity and AfriForum over disputed clauses at NEDLAC. Makaneta says such attacks undermine efforts to improve the education system:
# Government is urging South Africans to take extra caution as a heatwave persists in certain parts of the country. Extremely hot conditions are being experienced in the Northern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. Government Communication and Information System’s spokesperson, Nonkululeko Mtshali, says people are urged to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated:
# Cricket Australia has appointed Todd Greenberg as its new chief executive, the 15th person to lead the organisation since its establishment in 1982. Greenberg is the current CEO of the Australian Cricketers’ Association and former CEO of the National Rugby League. He will take over when Nick Hockley steps down in March. Greenberg says the rapid growth of the game globally creates fantastic opportunities, while also presenting some challenges to ensure Australian cricket retains its position at the very peak of the game.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-8-cents and the euro at 19-rand-4-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-95-cents and Bitcoin trades at 95-thousand-299-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-646-dollars-51-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-45-cents a barrel.
# And finally: An Australian woman was forced to fend off a deadly tiger snake in her vehicle while driving 80 kilometres per hour on a freeway outside Melbourne. Police in Victoria say the barefoot woman tried to flag down vehicles on the side of the Monash Freeway. She said she felt something on her foot and looked down to find one of the world’s most venomous serpents slithering up her leg. According to experts it’s a near miracle that the woman escaped unscathed.
