Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Cosatu condemns the apartheid flags at the BELA protest
# ActionSA proposes an alternative electoral model
# And tennis: 256-million-rand is up for grabs in the ATP Finals
# Cosatu says it condemns the people who saw yesterday’s march against the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act in Pretoria as an opportunity to display old apartheid-era flags. The DA, AfriForum, Solidarity and other organisations marched against the BELA Act. Cosatu’s Zanele Sabela says the Human Rights Commission must launch an investigation and hold the responsible people accountable, as the act is not about race:
# ActionSA says it has made an official submission to the Electoral Review Consultation Panel to propose an alternative electoral model for South Africa. This includes increasing voter turnout, enhancing the quality of public representatives, and introducing lasting accountability. ActionSA’s national chairperson, Michael Beaumont, says 30 years into democracy, the national project needs to move towards greater levels of accountability and raising the bar on the quality of public representatives:
No news on the American election:
# Republican candidate Donald Trump has declared this election campaign America’s golden age to restore national greatness. After casting his vote, Trump called the campaign the greatest political movement of all time. He also emphasised the role of healing the nation. Trump is currently leading the votes at 51.2-percent against Democrat Kamala Harris’s 47.4-percent. He vowed to address key issues for America’s future:
# Protests erupted outside Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official residence after he fired Defence minister Yoav Gallant. Netanyahu says he lost confidence in Gallant over the management of the wars in Gaza and Lebanon. Gallant says his dismissal was the result of a dispute over three things. These are the issue of ultra-Orthodox military service, the abandonment of hostages in Gaza, and the need for an official inquiry into Hamas’ October 7 attack. He will be replaced by Foreign minister Israel Katz.
# Tennis: This season’s eight best singles men’s players and doubles pairings will fight it out for total prize money of 265-million-rand at the ATP Finals, starting in Turin, Italy, on Sunday. The singles champion will take home 85-million-dollar if he ends the tournament undefeated, and 39-million-rand if he lost a match underway to the final. The eight players are divided in two groups in the round robin phase, and the top-two in each group advance to the semifinals. The final takes place next Sunday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-59-cents and the euro at 18-rand-95-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-73-cents and Bitcoin trades at 73-thousand-308-dollars-30-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-728-dollars-7-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-17-cents a barrel.
