Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# President Cyril Ramaphosa sets ambitious investment goals, aiming for 2-trillion-rand over five-years
# The Motor Industry Staff Association calls for collective action to preserve heritage and protect the planet
# And, rugby, the Currie Cup winning Sharks depart for the start of the United Rugby Championship
# President Cyril Ramaphosa has set a new investment target of two-trillion-rand by 2028, following the early achievement of South Africa’s previous 1.2-trillion-rand goal. The president, leading South Africa’s delegation to the 79th UN General Assembly, also rang the New York Stock Exchange closing bell, accompanied by NYSE president Lynn Martin and other officials. Speaking at the SA-US business forum, Ramaphosa invited US investors to explore opportunities in sectors like renewable energy, manufacturing and infrastructure:
# The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court has transferred the 54-million-rand fraud and corruption case against former acting police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane and five co-accused to the High Court in Pretoria. They are set to appear on October 21st, for pretrial conferencing. They face charges related to the irregular procurement of software used during the #FeesMustFall protests in 2015 including fraud, and corruption. Investigating Directorate spokesperson Henry Mamothame says all accused are currently out on bail:
# The Motor Industry Staff Association is calling for collective action this Heritage Day to celebrate cultural diversity and protect the environment. Through its women’s and young workers’ forums, the association supports community projects, environmental initiatives, and efforts to protect endangered rhinos. MISA’s CEO, Martlé Keyter, encourages other organisations to collaborate in building a sustainable and culturally vibrant legacy for future generations.
# Instead of an ad targeting the American state Georgia, the stock photo chosen by Donald Trump’s campaign showed the eastern European country of the same name, after someone on the Trump team confused the two. The Shutterstock image used with the ad shows the Caucasus Mountain in northwestern Georgia. The ad itself was specifically targeting users in the state Georgia asking them to vote in the November elections. The country Georgia is a small independent republic on the shore of the Black Sea between Russia and Turkey.
# Rugby: The dust has hardly settled on the victorious Currie Cup campaign and it is already time for the Sharks to shift focus from their title-winning effort onto the United Rugby Championship, which begins for the South African teams this weekend. The Durban side departed yesterday to begin their tournament in Ireland on Saturday when they take on Connacht before heading east to Wales to play the Dragons and then Italy for a clash with Benetton. Coach John Plumtree has named a 27-man touring squad captained by loose-forward Vincent Tshituka.
