# The KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says a recent report indicates that black men are the highest perpetrators of crime in South Africa. Speaking at the provincial Crime Prevention Summit, Mkhwanazi said police and criminals are at war and police must be given space to fight crime. He emphasised the need for a collective approach to restore safety in KZN:
# Communication and Digital Technologies minister Solly Malatsi has vowed to investigate issues faced by retrenched Post Office workers. Workers have reported problems with accessing UIF and pension benefits due to incomplete paperwork and issues with severance payments. The minister says he plans to meet with business rescue practitioners to resolve the matter and improve communication:
# The South African Democratic Teachers Union has expressed disappointment by the acquittal of 12 learners from Pretoria High School for Girls, who were found not guilty of misconduct. The learners faced disciplinary action for allegedly participating in a WhatsApp group with racial comments about black learners. In a statement from the school, the suspended prefect privileges have also been reinstated. The school’s principal has since been suspended in connection with the controversy.
# Basketball: The South African men’s under 23 wheelchair team is participating in a tournament in Libya this weekend, hoping to reach the qualifying tournament for next year’s World Championship in the age group. The team, known as the Amawheelaboys, is the reigning African champion. The IWBF Africa Northern Region Tournament is held in Tripoli. The qualification tournament for the World Championships takes place in the Egyptian capital of Cairo in January next year.
# And, Aerosmith says Steven Tyler’s voice has been permanently damaged by a vocal cord injury last year and the band will no longer tour. The iconic band behind hits like Love in an Elevator and Livin’ on the Edge announced the cancellation of the remaining dates. Tyler announced he injured his vocal cords in September during a show. His soaring vocals have powered Aerosmith since its formation in 1970. The group is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a four-time Grammy winning band.
