# President Cyril Ramaphosa says every effort must be made to ensure the government of national unity remains true to its founding spirit of collaboration in good faith, to drive a programme that improves the lives of all South Africa’s people. Ramaphosa says as parties finalise the modalities of the government of national unity guided by the Statement of Intent, the days and weeks that lie ahead will be crucial. He says political parties should not waste their energies on those who stand in the way of the country’s progress or lose momentum over differences that can be resolved.
# The Road Traffic Management Corporation has condemned what it calls the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse’s unwarranted, malicious and unjustified attacks on the Department of Transport. The RTMC’s spokesperson, Simon Zwane, says OUTA’s misguided interest in the procurement processes relating to the replacement and upgrading of the driver’s licence card printing machine, is shocking. Zwane says the organisation also ignores progress that has been made to improve road safety during minister Sindisiwe Chikunga’s tenure:
# Russian authorities say six people were killed and over 100 wounded in yesterday’s Ukrainian drone and missile attacks. Five of the people, including two children, were killed by falling debris from Ukrainian missiles that were shot down over a coastal area in Sevastopol. Russia’s Defence Ministry says both Ukraine and the US bear the responsibility for the attack on civilians, as US-supplied missiles were used in the Ukrainian attack.
# Rugby: The Springboks will arrive in South Africa tomorrow after their flight from London to Johannesburg was cancelled. The team was scheduled to fly back to South Africa on last night to begin preparations for the series against Ireland. The flight was cancelled following several delays, which forced the team to remain in London for an extra night. The squad is now set to fly to SA late this afternoon. As a result of this, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will announce his squad for the Ireland series tomorrow.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-12-cents and the euro at 19-rand-42-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-94-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-441-dollars-94-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-328-dollars-73-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 84-dollars-52-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The City of Cape Town says as part of its efforts to curb the narcotics trade, the Metro Police continues to invest in its K9 unit. In recent weeks, four new furry recruits have started their basic training. Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith says since July last year, a total of nine-thousand-328 suspects were arrested in possession of drugs and dealing in drugs:
