# Former Western Cape Judge president, John Hlophe, has been appointed chief whip of the MK Party in Parliament. Hlophe’s appointment follows his recent dismissal for attempting to influence justices in a case related to former president Jacob Zuma. An investigation by the Judicial Service Commission found that in 2008 Hlophe had made contact with two of the eleven judges of the Constitutional Court in an attempt to favour Zuma in his Arms Deal case. He became the first judge to be fired since the dawn of democracy.
# RISE Mzansi says it has written a letter to president Cyril Ramaphosa in anticipation of the announcement of his new Cabinet, requesting for the appointment of a suitably qualified minister for the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture. RISE Mzansi’s Tebogo Moalusi says after various engagements with different stakeholders, members and artists in the Cultural and Creative Industry have expressed profound concern regarding the current state of leadership within the department:

# A man died after mass demonstrations against proposed tax hikes in the Kenyan capital. Amnesty International saying it was a protester who had been shot. Led largely by Gen-Z Kenyans, the protests began in Nairobi earlier this week before spreading nationwide, galvanised by widespread discontent over President William Ruto’s economic policies as many already grapple with a cost-of-living crisis. Yesterday’s demonstrations in Nairobi were mostly peaceful, but officers fired tear gas and water canon throughout the day in an attempt to disperse people who gathered to protest near parliament.
# Cycling: Double defending champion Jonas Vingegaard will ride in this year’s Tour de France after recovering from serious injuries. Vingegaard was hospitalised after breaking ribs and a collarbone, as well as damaging a lung in a mass crash on the Tour of the Basque Country in April. He was back on a bike a month later and said he feels confident enough to be on the start line for the 29 June to 21 July race which begins in Florence, Italy.
