# And Taylor Swift is now the most-awarded artist in MTV history
# President Cyril Ramaphosa is calling on South Africans to remain vigilant against those who seek to undermine national unity and turn citizens against one another. In his weekly newsletter, he says at a time when unemployment is high and there is a need to attract investment, travelling to foreign capitals to spread the falsehood of a white genocide in one’s own country is neither responsible nor patriotic. AfriForum and Solidarity have been accused of promoting the white genocide narrative abroad. Ramaphosa says freedom of expression comes with responsibility.
# Limpopo police are investigating a murder and rape case against a police sergeant stationed at Mecklenburg police station, and also opened an inquest. It is alleged the man shot a 32-year-old man in the Sekhukhune District Municipality yesterday. Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect thereafter drove to his residence in Ga-Masha with a 14-year-old girl who had been accompanying him, and allegedly raped her:
# Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has welcomed the 2026 Foundation Phase Catalogue, particularly its focus on reading and comprehension. It provides updated, curriculum-aligned materials, stronger resources for foundational literacy and provision for newer curriculum areas such as Coding and Robotics. Full implementation is projected to cost 1.6-billion-rand. Makaneta says the catalogue provides for 40 readers per class and a Core Reader for every learner, which is a right step towards improving literacy:
# Golf: The United States completed a dramatic comeback on the final day at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois to clinch the Presidents Cup for the eleventh successive time. Brandt Snedeker’s team required eight points from the final 12 matches against the Internationals to avoid a first defeat since 1998. They won nine of the 12 singles matches to seal a 17-13 victory. Snedeker says the players gave it their all:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-44-cents against the rand and the euro at 18-rand-71-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-81-cents and Bitcoin trades at 82-thousand-889-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-147-dollars-90-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 104-dollars-83-cents a barrel.
# And finally, pop sensation Taylor Swift has made history by becoming the most awarded artist at the MTV Video Music Awards. The 36-year-old American, who was previously tied with Beyoncé with 30 awards, won three awards at last night’s ceremony in Los Angeles. Swift took home the inaugural Artist Director Honours, and Video of the Year and Best Direction for The Fate of Ophelia. Madonna won Artist of the Year, while Song of the Year went to BTS for Swim. Bruno Mars won Best R&B for I Just Might.
