# The Constitutional Court rules that men can assume their wives’ surnames
# The DA says police still have no workable plan to stop the gang violence on the Cape Flats
# And rugby: The All Blacks coach makes six changes to the starting side for the Springbok clash in Wellington
# The Constitutional Court has made a historic ruling that men can now legally adopt their wives’ surnames, declaring parts of Section 26 of the Births and Deaths Registration Act unconstitutional. The case, brought by two couples, argued discrimination on gender. Justice Leona Theron said the norm was rooted in colonial patriarchy placing women in inferior positions. She gave Parliament 24-months to amend the law to align with constitutional equality:
# The DA in the Western Cape says the gang violence devastating Cape Town’s Cape Flats reveals the urgent need for the devolution of policing powers to provinces that can deliver real safety. Over 200 people were killed in gang-related violence in the province last month. The DA’s Lisa Schickerling says acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia’s confession that there is still no workable plan to stop the gang violence tearing the Cape Flats apart is appalling:
# AfriForum Youth will today hand over a petition to North-West University’s management, protesting the institution’s refusal to condemn the Kill the Boer chant. The demand, first sent to vice-chancellor Bismark Tyobeka in June, follows the chant being sung outside residences on the Potchefstroom campus. AfriForum’s Yvonne Gerber says they also called for disciplinary action against those involved. AfriForum Youth members will present the petition to Campus Director of Student Life, Corrie Rheeder.
# Rugby: New Zealand coach Scott Robertson has made six changes to the side that will face South Africa in the second Rugby Championship Test in Wellington on Saturday. Leroy Carter will make his Test debut, replacing Rieko Ioane on the left wing. Samisoni Taukei’aho comes in for Codie Taylor, who is on concussion stand-down, while Will Jordan moves from fullback to the right wing, taking over from the injured Emoni Narawa. Noah Hotham and Tyrel Lomax are back in the starting side. Brodie McAlister comes into the reserves.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-53-cents and the euro at 20-rand-50-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-70-cents and Bitcoin trades at 114-thousand-152-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-628-dollars-96-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-13-cents a barrel.
# And finally: A vaccine to treat chlamydia in Australia’s koala population has been approved in a world-first project. Researchers developed the vaccine to protect the famed marsupial. Chlamydia is responsible for half of koala deaths in the country’s wild populations, which are predominantly found in the eucalyptus forests along the east coast. Often used as an emblem of local culture, the animals can only be found in Australia. The creatures are also vulnerable to habitat loss, animal attacks and being hit by cars, and were named critically endangered in 2022.
