In this bulletin:
# BOSA requests president Ramaphosa to establish an inquiry into the alleged criminal capture of the justice system
# Cricket: Jofra Archer is poised to make his long-awaited comeback for England in the third Test against India
# And Netanyahu nominates Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize
# Build One South Africa’s leader, Mmusi Maimane, warns that public confidence in safety and accountability institutions has eroded to dangerous levels. This follows KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s damning allegations of co-ordinated efforts to obstruct cases and shield those behind political killings. BOSA’s spokesperson, Roger Solomons, says Maimane has asked president Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently implement several interventions:
Meanwhile, the Activists and Citizens Forum says it salutes Mkhwanazi for challenging the corrupt system under Ramaphosa’s leadership. Mkhwanazi also made accusations against minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu. The forum’s spokesperson, Dennis Bloem, says the claims are just the tip of the iceberg:
# Eskom says it continues to remove illegal connections as part of its efforts to protect infrastructure and ensure a reliable electricity supply. The power utility’s spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, says in some areas, they are seeing an increase in transformer trips, particularly in the evenings, due to overloading. She says this is often the result of meter bypasses and illegal connections, especially in communities with a high number of backyard dwellings, or where residential properties have been converted into small businesses:
# Cricket: England’s coach, Brendon McCullum, says fast bowler Jofra Archer is available for selection for the third Test against India at Lord’s, starting on Thursday. The 30-year-old has not played a Test since February 2021 due to a series of elbow and lower back injuries. India levelled the series one-all at Edgbaston last week, defeating the hosts by 336 runs. McCullum says everyone knows what Archer is capable of achieving, adding that he hopes he can recapture his form.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-77-cents and the euro at 20-rand-89-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-22-cents and Bitcoin trades at 108-thousand-463-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-326-dollars-66-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 68-dollars-76-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he has nominated US president Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The two leaders met in Washington yesterday for the first time since the US launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear programme. Netanyahu has commended Trump’s efforts to end conflicts in the Middle East, saying he fully deserves the prize. Last month, Pakistan said it would recommend Trump for the prize for his work in helping to resolve its recent conflict with India.
