# AfriForum plans to obtain warrants to seize assets from former president Jacob Zuma after he failed to pay over 500-thousand-rand in legal costs. The costs relate to his unlawful medical parole ruling in 2021. Despite orders from the High Court in Pretoria, the Supreme Court of Appeal, and the Constitutional Court, only one payment has been made. AfriForum’s Louis Boshoff condemned Zuma’s delaying tactics:
# The death toll from the Eastern Cape floods has risen to 95 as search and recovery efforts continue, assisted by the South African National Defence Force. Out of the recovered bodies, 86 have been identified and collected by their families, and processes are underway for the identification of the remaining bodies. Provincial spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie, says the support of government institutions and non-governmental organisations has been helpful:
# The Israeli government says it has agreed to a ceasefire with Iran, emphasising it has achieved all of its objectives and much more. These include removing a dual immediate existential threat, both in the nuclear and ballistic missile fields, achieving full air control over Tehran’s skies, and inflicting severe damage on the military leadership. The ceasefire, brokered by US president Donald Trump, comes after 11 days of strikes between the two countries. The Israeli government says it will respond forcefully to any violation of the ceasefire.
# Rugby: South Africa is marking a moment in history today, celebrating 30-years since the Springboks’ historic 1995 World Cup final victory over New Zealand at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. The 15–12 victory became a unifying moment for the newly democratic nation. The Boks have won the coveted Webb Ellis Trophy three more times since – in 2007, 2019 and 2023 – but the 1995 triumph remains the most symbolic. The Boks kick of this season on Saturday when they face the Barbarians in Cape Town.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-73-cents and the euro at 20-rand-55-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-10-cents and Bitcoin trades at 105-thousand-144-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-325-dollars-53-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 68-dollars-27-cents a barrel.
# And finally: A historic violin worth more than 3.6-million-rand was stolen from a London pub. The instrument belongs to a member of the London Philharmonia Orchestra. The 30-year-old owner reported the theft to police on the evening it was stolen but it has still not been found. British police are now appealing for help to find the 285-year-old instrument and released a CCTV recording of a man leaving the pub with the violin. It was made in Florence, Italy, in 1740 and is described by the owner as incredibly precious and priceless.
