In this bulletin:
# BOSA says the government of national unity failed to combat crime in its first year in office
# Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi supports new regulations to bypass the State Information Technology Agency
# And Motorsport: The Canadian Grand Prix is confirmed until at least 2035
# Build One South Africa says the government of national unity’s first year in office has not turned the tide on the epidemic of violent crime. The party says with over 80 murders and 135 rapes reported daily, South Africa remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world. BOSA’s spokesperson, Roger Solomons, says recent increases in police budgets have not translated into improved crime detection, case resolution, or member wellbeing:
# Justice and Constitutional Development minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi, supports new regulations allowing government departments to bypass the State Information Technology Agency when it comes to procuring IT services. Communications minister Solly Malatsi introduced the new rules last month. Kubayi told Parliament SITA is the department’s weakest link, contributing to poor service and hindering digital progress. She insists the agency’s inefficiencies justify the move towards alternative technology solutions.
# Government is encouraging young people to consider starting their own business, saying entrepreneurship is one of the keys to building a better future. Initiatives, including the National Youth Development Agency’s Grant Programme and the Youth Challenge Fund, are aimed at boosting black-owned businesses and historically disadvantaged groups. Government spokesperson, Mfundo Nkosi, says more is being done to create employment and entrepreneurship for young people:
# The Israeli Defence Force says it launched a wave of strikes on Iranian uranium centrifuge and missile production sites overnight. It says among the facilities targeted was a site for producing raw materials and components for assembling surface-to-air missiles, a centrifuge production facility, and an academy linked to the Revolutionary Guard Corps. Centrifuges are machines that enrich uranium. The IDF says it is confident that the Iranian regime is enriching uranium intended for developing nuclear weapons.
# Motorsport: Canada will host a Formula One Grand Prix until at least 2035. This follows the sport’s signing of an extention to Quebec and Canada’s deal to host a race in Montreal, which hosted it’s first Grand Prix in 1978. The race had been in doubt after F1 CEO Stefano Dominicali issued a stern warning following complaints over the organisation and logistics last year. On Sunday, everything went much smoother and the deal, originally due to run until 2031, had been extended by another four years.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-1-cent and the euro at 20-rand-72-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-22-cents and Bitcoin trades at 105-thousand-137-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-386-dollars-99-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-2-cents a barrel.
