# The police’s revised Gender-Based Violence and Femicide action plan came under strong criticism during a joint sitting of Parliament’s portfolio committees on Police and on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities. The plan, which was finalised in January, focuses on strengthening frontline services and establishing child-focused committees. However, the chairperson of the committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Liezl Linda van der Merwe, questioned its effectiveness, citing poor implementation:
# The Western Cape Education Department has called on parents with multiple placement offers for Grades R, 1 or 8 in 2026 to confirm their choice by the end of today. Education MEC David Maynier says double-parked parents are delaying placements for others. He urges urgent confirmation of placements as many parents wait to place their children:
# At least 15 people have been killed and over 50 were wounded in Russia’s overnight drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv. Officials say Moscow launched more than 440 drones and 32 missiles in 27 different locations. A ballistic missile hit a nine-storey apartment building in one district. Russia’s Defence Ministry says it intercepted and destroyed 147 Ukrainian drones overnight. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has called Russia’s most recent wave of strikes pure terrorism.
# Golf: Five-time major champion, Rory McIlroy, has become the first player to automatically earn a spot in captain Luke Donald’s Team Europe for the Ryder Cup. The Northern Irishman locked up his spot as a result of securing four victories since the European points list began last August. McIlroy will make his eighth consecutive Ryder Cup appearance at the biennial competition, scheduled for September in New York. Donald’s 12-man team will consist of six automatic qualifiers and six captain’s picks.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-18-cents and the euro at 20-rand-57-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-15-cents and Bitcoin trades at 106-thousand-643-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-385-dollars-30-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-10-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The Black Coffee Foundation has raised 500-thousand-rand to support flood victims in the Eastern Cape, where 90 people have died and thousands have been displaced. Since the first evacuations, the foundation has provided food, clothing, and toiletries to affected families in Mthatha. Musician DJ Black Coffee has also asked South Africans to continue assisting victims with items such as blankets, warm clothing, non-perishable food, and baby supplies. Donations can be made through the foundation.
