# Government is calling on South Africans to use this week to recommit to building a child-friendly country. This week is National Child Protection Week under the theme, Working Together in Ending Violence Against Children. Government’s spokesperson, Nokululeko Mtshali, says protecting children from violence, exploitation, and abuse is not only a basic value but also an obligation set out in Article 28 of the Constitution:
# The Public Servants Association has expressed concern about the findings of the latest report on the cost of living in South Africa. The Trend in the Cost of Living in South Africa report revealed that while cumulative headline inflation rose by 94.6-percent between 2011 and 2023, the cost of essentials surged at a much faster rate. PSA’s, Claude Naiker, says the prices of necessities such as food, housing, and transportation have surged, placing an unbearable burden on low-income households:
# The European Union says it is staying the course on its 2030 climate commitments, investing with determination in the clean energy transition. The EU is closing in collectively on a 55-percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and reaching a share of at least 42.5-percent of renewable energy. It says member states are demonstrating political resolve to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, and improve the resilience and security of energy supplies. It adds that bringing all actors on board is crucial for a just transition to a climate-neutral economy.
# Cricket: Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada says he is ready for Australia’s infamous sledging tactics, which will only serve to motivate him further. The two nations are preparing to face off in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s, England, next week. The last time the 30-year-old played at the hallowed ground, he got a five-wicket haul against England in August 2022. Rabada says he understands his pivotal role in the squad and recognises the Australians will likely attempt to provoke him, which is part of the game.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-88-cents and the euro at 20-rand-40-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-15-cents and Bitcoin trades at 104-thousand-988-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-362-dollars-44-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-86-cents a barrel.
# And finally: South African artist Phillip Matlhoko from Kimberley is set to exhibit his art in China as part of the Fourth China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo in the Hunan province starting next Thursday. Representatives from 44 African countries, six international organisations and 23 Chinese provincial-level regions are expected to attend the expo. Team South Africa includes three others who will join Matlhoko in the exhibition to showcase their work. Matlhoko told the SABC that the exhibition is all about cultural exchange:
