# Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, accepted memorandums from child protection organisations during a Children’s March to the Constitutional Court on Sunday. This as the country is observing Child Protection Awareness Month, under the theme, Working Together to End Violence Against Children. In her address, Kubayi outlined a 90-day monitoring programme being implemented to track gender-based violence and femicide-related cases from the moment they are reported to final court outcomes:
# Cosatu says the Labour Migration Policy and the Employee Services Amendment Bill provide a long overdue response to the flood of undocumented migrant labour into the economy over the past decade. Last week, the cabinet approved the bill for submission to Parliament and approved the white paper on National Labour Migration Policy for implementation. Cosatu’s spokesperson, Matthew Parks, says this paves the way for tighter regulation of foreign nationals employed in key sectors of the economy:
# At least 151 people in central Nigeria are now known to have died following flash floods that destroyed homes and displaced thousands of residentssince last week. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Nsema, confirmed to the BBC the death toll had risen sharply from 115, after floods hit the town of Mokwa. A Nsema spokesman told the BBC more than 500 households with a population in excess of three-thousand people were affected. Some families are said to have lost between two and five relatives including children.
# Cricket: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has called time on his 13-year one-day international career with immediate effect. The 36-year-old, who is one of the most explosive batters in the history of the sport, made 149 appearances, scored three-thousand-990 runs, took 77 wickets and won two ODI World Cup titles. Maxwell will remain an active part of Australia’s T20 set-up in a bid to win next year’s short-form World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-88-cents and the euro at 20-rand-43-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-23-cents and Bitcoin trades at 105-thousand-559-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-352-dollars-52-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-51-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Disney’s blockbuster Lilo and Stitch, which is the second top-grossing Hollywood release of 2025 behind A Minecraft Movie, remains at number one in the box office for the second consecutive weekend. Paramount and Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, starring Tom Cruise, is second, with Karate Kid: Legends opening at number three. In its third outing, Final Destination: Bloodlines came in fourth with another newcomer, A24’s supernatural horror film, Bring Her Back, launching in fifth place.
