# Deputy president Paul Mashatile on Sunday attended the Andrew Lasaba Methodist Church in Khayelitsha as part of the party’s mobilisation programme. The ANC will celebrate its 113th anniversary in Khayelitsha in the Western Cape and it will be party’s first anniversary rally in the region since 2015. Mashatile expressed optimistism about turnout and called for greater community engagement in order to move the ANC forward:
# The N3 Toll Concession says wet weather conditions are currently being experienced along most parts of the N3, but there is no flooding. The South Africa Weather Service has issued a level 8 warning of disruptive rainstorms across the KwaZulu-Natal province until Wednesday. N3 Toll Concession spokesperson, Thania Dhoogra says four people were injured in an early morning crash involving a bus and truck near Colenso in KwaZulu-Natal:
# US Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley was arrested and stun-gunned during a confrontation with police officers in Miami, Florida last week and is now facing charges of battery, resisting officers and disorderly conduct. Kerley won a bronze medal in the men’s 100 metres at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Police body camera footage shows several officers pushing Kerley to the ground with one appearing to hit him multiple times. Kerley’s defense attorney told CNN the footage shows Kerley was treated like millions of African-Americans, with a lack of humanity, compassion, or respect.
# Tennis: World number nine Daria Kasatkina swept into the Adelaide International second round, but Paris Olympic silver medallist Donna Vekic crashed to her third straight defeat of the season. Russia’s Kasatkina, runner-up at the last two editions of the Australian Open warm-up event, beat Australia’s Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-3. She will next face last year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon junior runner-up Emerson Jones. Croatia’s Vekic, a Wimbledon semi-finalist last year, saw her Australian Open build-up go from bad to worse with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-69-cents and the euro at 19-rand-31-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-29-cents and Bitcoin trades at 99-thousand-516-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-627-dollars-84-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-97-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Demi Moore has made a triumphant return to the Golden Globes, winning best actress for a role that has revitalised her career. The 62-year-said she was “at a low point” in her career before being cast in The Substance. She said the award was a celebration of “the gift of doing something she loves and being reminded that she does belong”. Moore has been acting for over 45 years, and this was the first time she ever won a major award as an actor.
