# As 2024 draws to a close, deputy minister Cassel Mathale assured that police are prepared for crimes linked to year-end celebrations. He made these remarks during a festive season operation at the Mall of Africa in Midrand, Gauteng. Mathale urged residents to remain vigilant amid the anticipated rise in aggravated robberies and carjackings:

Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town’s enforcement teams are also prepared for New Year’s Eve, with over 35-thousand attendees expected at the Waterfront fireworks display. The city has warned that fireworks are prohibited without a permit. In addition, motorists have been cautioned of possible road congestion. # Former US president Jimmy Carter’s state funeral will take place at the Washington National Cathedral on the ninth of next month, part of a national day of mourning for the country’s oldest ex head of state. The world-renowned humanitarian died on Sunday, aged 100. President Joe Biden has ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast for 30 days. The timespan will include the inauguration of president-elect Donald Trump. Carter will be buried on his family’s property next to his wife, Rosalynn, who died aged 96 a year ago.

# Soccer: AC Milan has a new manager again after just six months. This follows after its Portuguese manager, Paulo Fonseca, was sacked yesterday. The Italian team is currently eighth in the Serie A competition after winning only two of their last seven league games. Fonseca replaced Stefano Pioli in June after the Italian led AC to a single league title in 2022 and finished second behind Inter Milan in his last season. Former manager of Porto, Sergio Conceicao, has been appointed to replace Fonseca till 30 June 2026.

# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-71-cents and the euro at 19-rand-48-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-49-cents and Bitcoin trades at 92-thousand-760-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-614-dollars-45-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-39-cents a barrel.

# And finally: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finally reached a settlement after eight years in one of the longest and most bitter divorces in Hollywood history. No court documents have been filed yet, and a judge will need to sign off on the agreement. Forty-nine-year-old Jolie and 61-year-old Pitt were one of Hollywood’s most prominent couples for 12 years. Dubbed “Brangelina”, the two Oscar winners have six children together. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 after a private jet flight during which she said Pitt was abusive towards her and their children.
