# The DA says it has submitted a letter to president Cyril Ramaphosa outlining a list of key proposals on South Africa’s approach to its hosting of the G20 Summit. The country prepares to assume the G20 Presidency on Sunday, the first time an African economy leads the G20 for a rotational, one-year term. The DA’s Ryan Smith says they are also calling for increased private sector involvement and expertise in the summit:
# The City of Johannesburg will pay its 1.4-billion-rand current debt to Eskom today, avoiding power cuts previously threatened over overdue payments. The metro’s spokesperson, Nthatisi Modingoane, says the South African National Energy Development Institute’s billing investigation deadline has been extended to 6 December. According to News24, the city also battles illegal electricity use, with nearly 47-percent of prepaid meters identified as non-vending. Efforts to address tampering and arrears are ongoing.
# Namibians headed to the polls yesterday, with many voters experiencing significant delays due to ballot shortages at several polling stations. Reports indicate that some voters waited for hours to cast their votes, highlighting logistical challenges. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, from the governing Swapo is seeking to become the country’s first female president. Namibian Police chief inspector, Elifas Kuwinga, says there wasn’t that many big security problems:
# Cricket: Kane Williamson scored 93 as New Zealand posted 319 for eight against England at stumps on day one of the first Test in Christchurch. Williamson, who anchored a recovery after the hosts lost a wicket in the second over, fell agonisingly short of what would have been a 33rd Test century. His dismissal trigged a wobble from the Black Caps, losing four wickets in the final session. Williamson says the match is evenly poised:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-23-cents and the euro at 19-rand-22-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-8-cents and Bitcoin trades at 95-thousand-298-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-637-dollars-65-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-85-cents a barrel.
# And finally: This year’s Breadline Africa Funky Socks Day raised nearly 1.5-million-rand, half-a-million-rand more than last year’s total. The campaign united South Africans from all walks of life to support early childhood development centres in vulnerable communities. The funds will provide 50 ECD centres across South Africa and Namibia with essential classroom materials and resources. Breadline Africa’s CEO, Marion Wagner, says investing in early childhood development is key to building a brighter future for children.
