# AfriForum says the suspension of food sales by vendors at schools is drastic
# NotInMyName demands Safa president Danny Jordaan’s suspension amid criminal charges
# And rugby: The top of the world rankings is shaken up after the weekend’s Tests
# AfriForum says the Gauteng Department of Education’s decision to prohibit the sale of food in and around school premises is far too drastic. Over 400 food poisoning cases have been reported in the province with 23 deaths, mostly children. The Free State Education Department has suspended all non-school-managed vendor activities on and around school grounds. AfriForum’s Alana Bailey says for some children, authorised tuckshops on school premises are the only option for getting lunch:
Meanwhile, Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya says all spaza shops in the metro should be operated by local people. This follows the rise in cases related to contaminated food sold at spaza shops. Moya says children cannot continue to die because of food products sold by foreign-run spaza shops. She adds that the Standards by-laws for township economies will be adopted by all municipalities to ensure a united approach to the food contamination problem.
# Civil organisation NotInMyName International has urged South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan to step down as he faces fraud and theft charges. He is set to appear in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng on Wednesday. Jordaan is accused of misusing SAFA resources, including funds for personal security and public relations services. The Hawks recently seized documents and devices from SAFA’s Nasrec offices in Gauteng as part of a probe into alleged misconduct totaling 1.3-million-rand. In a statement, the group calls for accountability.
# Rugby: The weekend’s Test results had a huge influence at the top of the world rankings. South Africa returned to the top spot after last night’s victory over Scotland, while New Zealand is now second, followed by Ireland who relinquished the number one position after losing to the All Blacks. France is still fourth and Argentina improved to fifth after beating Italy, followed by Scotland. England slumped to seventh after losing to the Wallabies, who improved to eighth. Fiji is ninth after beating Wales, and Italy is tenth.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-61-cents and the euro at 18-rand-83-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-72-cents and Bitcoin trades at 81-thousand-167-dollars-80-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-670-dollars-9-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-99-cents a barrel.
# And finally: South Africa’s Tyla won three awards at the MTV Europe Music Awards held in Manchester, England. She won Best R&B, Best Afrobeats, and Best African Artist. Pop superstar Taylor Swift was the big winner, walking away with four awards, namely Best Artist, Best Video for her collaboration with Post Malone on Fortnight, Best Live, and Best US Act. Other winners include Eminem, Ariana Grande, and Raye. Tyla says she was honoured and shocked to have won:
