# Gauteng police commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, says the suspect linked to the murder and rape of six-year-old Amantle Samane, has officially been identified as Mozambican national Pethe Sara Simiao. He was arrested yesterday evening. Amantle’s body was found in a shack not far from her home in Soweto on Monday. Mthombeni says they have a problem with South Africans harbouring undocumented foreign nationals:
# Stellenbosch University and the Association for the Advancement of Wilgenhof Residents have settled on the university’s decision to close the historic Wilgenhof men’s residence next year. The association had sought a court interdict to halt the closure due to what the university’s council termed unacceptable and secretive initiation practices. As part of the agreement, Wilgenhof students can remain together in a new residence during renovations and return in the second term. Both parties committed to renewal and transformation, marking a shift from past practices at the residence.
# US vice-president Kamala Harris believes former president Donald Trump wants unchecked power in a potential second term. This comes after Trump’s former White House chief of staff, John Kelly, accused him of being a fascist. He recalled how Trump lamented not having generals who swore loyalty to him in the same manner as military commanders served Adolf Hitler. Harris says Trump wants a military who will be loyal to him, personally:
# Cricket: Kagiso Rabada and Kyle Verreynne were South Africa’s heroes in their seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test in Mirpur. Verreyne directed the Proteas’ first innings lead of 202 runs with a quick-fire century after the hosts were bundled out for just 106. Rabada then took six wickets in Bangladesh’s second innings and they reached 307, setting the visitors a winning target of 106. South Africa reached that within 22 overs for the loss of three wickets. The second Test starts in Chattogram on Tuesday.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-69-cents and the euro at 19-rand-10-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-94-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-108-dollars-10-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-735-dollars-71-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-12-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The port of Cape Town has been awarded Africa’s Leading Cruise Port at the World Travel Awards. This is the second consecutive year the port has received this accolade. Mayoral committee member for Economic Growth, James Vos, says this recognition highlights the port’s rising prominence in the cruise industry, with 88 vessel visits and around 130-thousand passengers expected in the 2024/’25 season. He adds that each cruise visit contributes about 100-million-rand to the local economy.
