# The young man accused of killing University of Stellenbosch student Jesse Mitchell will return to the local Magistrate’s Court on the 27th of this month. Nineteen-year-old Rudolf Hufke abandoned his bail application when he appeared for the second time yesterday. He was arrested shortly after Mitchell was murdered on his way to his residence in the early hours of Wednesday last week, on his 19th birthday. Three other suspects arrested on Friday were released later without being charged.
# Rivonia Circle director, Tessa Dooms, has called on the ANC coalition in Johannesburg to hold former mayor Kabelo Gwamanda accountable following his arrest over a 2011 funeral policy scam. Dooms emphasised to Newzroom Afrika that mayor Dada Morero must enforce consequence management. She warns against party politics and stresses the need to appoint capable leaders to serve the city:
# Severe flooding following heavy rain overnight has resulted in scores of Eastern Cape residents, particularly in Gqeberha and Kariega, being evacuated. They are now being housed in community halls and schools. A level six warning of heavy rain was issued yesterday. Gift of the Givers’ operations manager, Ali Sablay, told the SABC they are currently in contact with the local disaster management teams who are identifying and trying to evacuate more residents in different areas:
# Cricket: A brilliant century by Kyle Verreyne led South Africa to a 202-run first-innings lead over Bangladesh on the second day of the first Test in Mirpur. Yesterday the Proteas bowled the hosts out for just 106, but the visitors lost their sixth wicket with a lead of only two runs. Verreyne, with the help of firstly Wiaan Mulder and then Dane Piedt, then took the score to 308 before he was stumped on 114. Mulder contributed 54 and Piedt 32, while Taijul Islam took five wickets.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-55-cents and the euro at 19-rand-2-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-82-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-251-dollars-18-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-734-dollars-15-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-76-cents a barrel
# And finally: Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced he will give away one-million-dollar each day to registered voters in battleground American states. It immediately drew scrutiny from election law experts who say the sweepstakes could violate laws against paying people to register. Musk promised awarding one-million-dollar randomly to people who have signed a petition in support of the First and Second Amendment. The richest man in the world has donated more than 1.3-billion-rand to former president Donald Trump’s re-election campaign. Musk recently held events advocating for Trump.
