# A 43-year-old Limpopo police sergeant has been arrested for allegedly killing six people for insurance fraud. The victims were killed in various parts of the province between 2019 and April this year. It is alleged the sergeant benefitted from more than ten-million-rand worth of insurance policies. Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, says she will appear before the Polokwane District Court tomorrow, facing six counts of murder and 17 of fraud:
# The Freedom Front Plus in Tshwane says ActionSA’s constant conniving has jeopardised stability in the metro, by placing it in the hands of a government which has already proven itself to be incompetent. ActionSA’s Nisiphi Moya was elected as mayor at a council meeting yesterday, with the help of the ANC and the EFF. The FF Plus says the former coalition government worked very hard to restore and rebuild Tshwane, and it is doubtful whether the new administrators will carry on the good work.
# Several deaths have been reported at a leisure resort in St Lucie County on Florida’s east coast after Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key as a dangerous category 3 storm before weakening to a category 2. Milton has knocked out power for more than two million people in the state. St Lucie County sheriff, Keith Pearson, told ABC News the exact number of fatalities is unclear at this stage:
# Soccer: Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has died at the age of 31. The England-born Greece international was found dead in the swimming pool of his house in the Athens suburb of Glyfada. Baldock signed for Greek side Panathinaikos earlier this year after seven years at Sheffield United. He had made four appearances for the club and started in their goalless draw with Olympiakos this past Sunday. Baldock has 12 international caps for Greece.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-60-cents and the euro at 19-rand-24-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-1-cent and Bitcoin trades at 60-thousand-844-dollars-66-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-616-dollars-88-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 77-dollars-31-cents a barrel.
# And finally: One of the last remaining survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, 100-year-old Lily Ebert, has died in London. She was 20 years old when she was deported from her hometown in Hungary to the concentration camp. Her great-grandson Dov Forman says Ebert’s mother, younger sister and brother were killed in the gas chambers but she vowed to tell her story. Forman wrote a bestselling book with his great-grandmother, titled Lily’s Promise. She was recognised with an MBE for her services to Holocaust education in January 2023.
