Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The trial of ten people linked to the murders at the University of Fort Hare begins
# Cricket: Temba Bavuma may miss the Test series against Bangladesh due to an injury
# And anticipation builds for today’s revelation of the winner or winners of the Nobel Prize for Physics
# The trial of ten people accused of murders and attempted murders at the University of Fort Hare is underway at the High Court in Bhisho in the Eastern Cape. They are accused of murdering the university’s fleet manager, Petrus Roets, and vice-chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu’s bodyguard, Mboneni Vesele. They are also accused of the attempted murder of Buhlungu and his deputy, Renuka Vithal, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Among the accused is the university’s head of investigations and vetting services, Isaac Plaatjies.
# The African Transformation Movement is calling for the establishment of a national joint operation to dismantle drug syndicates, arrest extortionists, combat gang violence, remove guns, and address illegal occupation. This follows two mass shootings in the Eastern Cape where 24 people were killed in Lusikisiki and Qumbu. ATM’s spokesperson, Zama Ntshona, says it is imperative that government allocates sufficient funding to strengthen community policing forums:
# US vice president Kamala Harris has reiterated that Israel has the right to defend itself but how it does so matters. Hamas’ attack on Israel on the seventh of October last year killed one-thousand-200 people, including 46 US citizens, and about 250 were taken hostage. In retaliation strikes, Israel has killed almost 42-thousand Palestinians. In a wide-ranging interview on CBS News’ 60 Minutes, Harris said a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon is needed urgently:
# Cricket: Proteas captain Temba Bavuma’s injury may keep him out of the two-Test tour of Bangladesh, starting on the 21st. He injured his arm during the second one-day match against Ireland in Abu Dhabi on Friday, and missed yesterday’s final game when Rassie van der Dussen led the team. This is the same problem that kept Bavuma on the sidelines for a lengthy period two years ago. The players are returning home from the United Arab Emirates today and Bavuma will then consult a specialist.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-49-cents and the euro at 19-rand-23-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-90-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-261-dollars-15-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-632-dollars-65-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 79-dollars-20-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Anticipation is growing as the Nobel Prize for Physics is set to be announced today. Following the award for Physiology or Medicine to United States scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA, all eyes are now on the prestigious physics prize. The Nobel Assembly’s secretary general, Thomas Perlmann, says this marks the next phase of Nobel week, where world-changing discoveries are celebrated across various disciplines:
