# President Cyril Ramaphosa will sign the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill into law at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday. The Bela Bill amends sections of the South African Schools Act of 1996 and the Employment of Educators Act of 1998, to account for developments in the education landscape since the enactment of the original legislation. Ramaphosa says the bill aims to strengthen governance within the country’s education sector.
# The parole hearing for Najwa Dirk Petersen, convicted of the 2006 murder of her husband, musician Taliep Petersen, will take place at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in Cape Town today. She has served 18-years for orchestrating her husband’s execution-style killing. Dirk Petersen initially pleaded not guilty, claiming it was a home invasion, but later confessed to being the mastermind. During her last parole meeting, her husband’s children expressed concerns about her lack of empathy and called for ongoing psychological support.
# The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds says it is concerned about the African penguin population at St Croix Island in the Eastern Cape following an oil spill in Algoa Bay. The South African Maritime Safety Authority is investigating the spill, believed to have originated from a container cargo vessel, MSC Apollo. The foundation says other seabirds such as Cape gannets and cormorants could also be affected by the oil spill.
# Rugby: Bulls coach Jake White says his team is probably as close as they have ever been to getting the balance right between youth and experience in the squad. They missed out on the United Rugby Championship title last season, losing to the Glasgow Warriors. White says he is hoping the experience gained will help his team in the playoff stages of the championship:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-86-cents and the euro at 19-rand-72-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-37-cents and Bitcoin trades at 56-thousand-529-dollars-31-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-523-dollars-14-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 70-dollars-29-cents a barrel.
# And finally: South African pop star Tyla was honoured by Billboard Magazine with the Global Impact Award at an event in New York. The 22-year-old is well known for her smash hit song Water, which she won a Grammy Award for. In July, she won the Billboard Award for Best New Artist and Best International Act. Tyla says being able to do what she loves on an international stage is a dream:
