# Experts are doubtful that South Africa will exit the greylist next year
# The Agriculture minister prioritises partnerships and rural safety
# And tennis: Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu are to team up for Wimbledon’s mixed doubles
# Experts have expressed doubt that South Africa will exit the Financial Action Task Force greylist by June next year. The task force which sets global standards for the combating of money-laundering and terrorism financing, found South Africa deficient and placed it on the greylist in February last year. Nedbank’s Isaac Matshego told the SABC the primary focus should be on resolving the fundamental issues that had caused the country to be listed:
# Agriculture minister John Steenhuisen’s first mandate in office is to organise agriculture partnerships to enhance the sector. This includes supporting small black emerging farmers and large commercial institutions. Steenhuisen also highlights other priority focus points, including improved infrastructure, rural safety, food security, economic growth, job creation, and resolving land issues constitutionally. He emphasises the importance of collaboration in boosting the agricultural sector:
# Police in India are searching for the organisers and the Hindu guru who hosted a religious gathering in central Uttar Pradesh state. At least 121 people were killed in a stampede at the event on Tuesday. The state government has ordered a judicial probe into the stampede. The Hindu preacher, Suraj Pal, known by his followers as Bhole Baba, is reported to have gone into hiding. Pal is a former police official who quit his job 20 years ago to turn to preaching.
# Tennis: Andy Murray and British compatriot Emma Raducanu will play in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon after being awarded a wild card. Thirty-seven-year-old Murray, a former world number one, earlier withdrew from the singles. He and his older brother, Jamie, will play in the men’s doubles, starting their campaign against Australians Rinky Hijikata and John Peers today. Murray won the singles title in 2013 and 2016, as well as the US Open in 2012. Twenty-one-year-old Raducanu won the US Open in 2021.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-35-cents and the euro at 19-rand-82-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-42-cents and Bitcoin trades at 58-thousand-172-dollars-44-cents. Gold sells at one-thousand-358-dollars-19-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 86-dollars-59-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Salad lovers are celebrating the invention of the Caesar salad exactly 100 years ago. Italian immigrant Caesar Cardini is credited with the invention at his restaurant, Caesar’s Place, in Tijuana, Mexico. Struggling to feed his customers on a hot night, Cardini tossed whole Romaine leaves with garlic-flavoured oil, Worcestershire sauce, lemons, boiled eggs and Parmesan cheese. The restaurant says it still makes as many as 300 Caesar salads every day. Tijuana is planning a three-day food and wine festival, and the unveiling of a statue of Cardini.
