# ActionSA says the DA appears to be backtracking on their vow to hold president Cyril Ramaphosa accountable for the Phala Phala scandal. ActionSA’s Athol Trollip reacted to DA Federal council chairperson, Helen Zille’s, comment that the DA will not vote for the impeachment of a president they voted for, unless new evidence emerged. Trollip says the Constitutional Court will soon hear an application challenging the ANC’s use of their parliamentary majority to strike down the adoption of the Independent Panel Report into the scandal:
# The Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga has welcomed the signing into law of the Economic Regulation of Transport Bill by president Cyril Ramaphosa. The department’s spokesperson, Collen Msibi says the Bill will oversee pricing, investigate complaints and enforce compliance by ensuring a fair and competitive transport industry. Msibi says the Transport Economic Council shall serve as an appeal institution on the decisions made by the Regulator:
# KwaZulu-Natal premier-elect Thami Ntuli takes his oath of office today at Woodburn Rugby Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. The IFP’s provincial chairperson, Ntuli was elected on Friday with support from the ANC, IFP, DA, and National Freedom Party, defeating MK Party candidate Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza. IFP spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa expressed confidence in Ntuli’s ability to deliver on the party’s mandate:
# At least eleven migrants have died and more than 60 are missing after two shipwrecks off the coast of southern Italy. German charity, Rescueship, said it picked up 51 people from a sinking, wooden boat on Monday. In a separate incident on the same day, more than 60 people were reported missing, with 26 of them feared to be children. The boats were carrying migrants who had set off from Libya and Turkey. According to UN data more than 23-thousand-500 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean since 2014.
# Tennis: French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has set his sights on more grass-court successes after his first title on the clay at Roland Garros. The 21-year-old became the youngest man to win major titles on all three surfaces – grass, hard courts, and clay – with a five-set victory over Alexander Zverev in Paris last Sunday. He is the defending champion at Wimbledon and is looking to repeat last year’s double of winning at both Queen’s Club and the grass-court Grand Slam. Alcaraz begins his Queen’s Club campaign today against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-18-cents and the euro at 19-rand-51-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-6-cents and Bitcoin trades at 65-thousand-622-dollars-94-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-313-dollars-61-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 84-dollars-3
-cents a barrel.
