# President Cyril Ramaphosa will visit the George disaster site tomorrow, following the fatal collapse of a partially built residential building. Since the fatal incident last week Monday, government and its disaster management agencies at all levels have mobilised personnel and resources towards the rescue efforts and providing support to the survivors and families of the victims. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, says the president remains deeply attentive to the rescue and recovery efforts and has expressed his deep condolences to the family and friends of the victims. The death toll has reached 33.
# Coalitions are lauded for their potential to foster inclusive governance, however, concerns loom over their stability and governance efficacy, particularly in South Africa’s upcoming election. This is according to the South African Institute of International Affairs. The institute’s, Isabel Bosman, says there is a lack of a coalition governance culture in the country:
# The Tshwane University of Technology has expressed sadness at the untimely passing of a second-year student at the Pretoria campus. Carol Mabunda, who was doing a national diploma in contact administration, apparently died following a stampede during the Freshers Bash over the weekend. The university says it is waiting on an official report from the police, adding that it is providing Mabunda’s family with as much support as possible.
# An Austrian court has ruled the country’s most notorious criminal may be moved to a normal prison. Josef Fritzl is being kept in an institution for mentally disturbed prisoners since 2009, when he was convicted of holding his daughter Elisabeth captive for 24 years and fathering seven children with her. The court says the 89-year-old, who has since changed his name, no longer poses a danger due to his progressive dementia and physical frailty. Elisabeth and her six surviving children have taken on new identities.
# Cricket: Delhi Capitals ended its group stage of the Indian Premier League with a 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants, to keep themselves in contention for a top-four finish, even if only mathematically. The Capitals made 208 for four, with half-centuries for Proteas batter Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel. In reply, the Super Giants were restricted to 189 for nine, with three wickets for Ishant Sharma. Stubbs says it was not the easiest surface to bat on:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-36-cents and the euro at 19-rand-87-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-12-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-126-dollars-67-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-363-dollars-95-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-77-cents a barrel.
