# The Supreme Court of Appeal has given the City of Tshwane permission to cut power supply to the Zambezi Retail Park shopping centre in Derdepoort over non-payment. The court found that a deliberate non-payment of services had been occurring since 2018. In court documents, the metro cited that by January 2022, 24-million-rand was owed by the centre’s body corporate. Tshwane’s spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo, says it is critical that body corporates must ensure their affairs are properly managed.
# Western Cape premier Alan Winde says the province is well on its way to meeting its target of generating five-thousand-700 megawatts of energy by 2035. This is part of the province’s Energy Resilience Programme. Winde says the province is currently rolling out solar photovoltaic and battery storage systems, and implementing a renewable energy project to make the town of Riversdale load-shedding free:
# The UK’s Labour Party has secured notable victories in the local elections, dealing a blow to Conservative prime minister Rishi Sunak’s leadership. Although vote counting is still ongoing, the biggest result overnight is in Blackpool South, where Labour’s Chris Webb won the parliamentary by-election from the Conservatives with ten-thousand-825 votes. Labour also made gains in Redditch and Hartlepool. Webb has called on Sunak to admit he had failed and to call a general election:
# Roadrunning: The fifth annual Prince Mangosuthu ultra-marathon returns to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on Sunday. It will be a poignant occasion as it marks the first year without the race’s namesake, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who passed away last September. The 52-kilometre race serves as a qualifier for the Comrades marathon. Umzinyathi district mayor, Petros Ngubane, says all measures are in place to ensure the event runs smoothly:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-56-cents and the euro at 19-rand-94-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-31-cents and Bitcoin trades at 59-thousand-323-dollars-59-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-299-dollars-75-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 83-dollars-75-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation has awarded its World Press Freedom prize to all Palestinian journalists covering the war in Gaza. According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 97 members of the media have been killed since the war with Israel broke out last year, 92 of whom were Palestinians. Unesco director-general Audrey Azoulay has praised the journalists’ courage in difficult and dangerous circumstances.
