In this bulletin:
# The High Court dismisses Bester and Magudumana’s application to halt a Netflix documentary
# Utah authorities releases a video showing the fleeing suspect in the Charlie Kirk shooting
# And soccer: Chelsea faces 74 charges over agent payments
# The High Court in Pretoria has dismissed with costs the urgent application by convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester and his former girlfriend, Nandipha Magudumana, to halt the airing of the Netflix documentary Beauty and the Bester. They argued the documentary contains defamatory information and infringes on their right to a fair trial. Judge Suet Potterill ruled the application is not urgent, and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty will in no way be impacted by the utterances in the documentary.
# Build One South Africa says it supports the Immigration Amendment Bill, as the integrity and sovereignty of the nation’s borders must be respected. The National Assembly passed the bill yesterday, which revises provisions relating to the arrest and detention of illegal foreigners for purposes of deportation. BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane says if government fails to create jobs, homes, and schools, they are the ones failing, not the fellow Africans living in South Africa:
# The EFF has welcomed minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau’s decision to withdraw the controversial draft amendments to the National Credit Act of 2005. The amendments proposed listing educational institutions as originators of credit information, which could have allowed unpaid student fees to be reported to credit bureaus. The EFF says this retreat by the government is not an act of goodwill by the ANC-DA-led government, but the direct result of sustained pressure by members of society, professionals, and the youth of South Africa.
Moving abroad:
# A video released by the Utah Department of Public Safety shows the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s murder running across the roof of a school building, and eventually going into a wooded area. The US right-wing youth leader was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The department’s commissioner, Beau Mason, says a black T-shirt with an American flag and Converse shoes are distinctive features of the suspect in the video:
# Soccer: England’s governing body has charged Chelsea with 74 alleged rule breaches relating to payments to agents for a period of 13 years. Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich owned the club at the time, with the charges primarily focused on events between 2009 and 2022, when he sold it to a consortium. The FA says Chelsea’s high level of co-operation will be a factor, with a fine, a transfer embargo and points deduction, some of the available punitive measures. The club has until next Friday to respond.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-36-cents and the euro at 20-rand-39-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-55-cents and Bitcoin trades at 115-thousand-386-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-653-dollars-2-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-72-cents a barrel.
