# Donald Trump offers help to Putin and Zelensky to end the war in Ukraine
# And in tennis news: Both Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek are out of Wimbledon
# The Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign says the South African government is failing to protect all documented refugees and migrants as escalating xenophobic violence, forced removals, displacement, and intimidation continue in South Africa. The campaign’s July Eccles says the government is obliged to make provision for the safety of documented refugees and migrants, and to provide humanitarian aid to the victims:
# ActionSA is calling on mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza to finalise the forensic report into the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department and urgently conclude the disciplinary process of the suspended deputy chief of police, Julius Mkhwanazi. The party’s Tumelo Tshabalala says restoring integrity in Ekurhuleni starts with reforming the EMPD. He says recent allegations and arrests within the EMPD confirm what residents have raised repeatedly:
# US President Donald Trump spoke to Russian leader Vladimir Putin by telephone for nearly 90 minutes, offering to help find a solution to the Ukraine war. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Trump once again confirmed his readiness to work towards a rapid end to the fighting and find solutions to overcome the crisis. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he also spoke to Trump and described his conversation with Trump as very good. He said there is a real prospect of ending the war, and American resolve will have a crucial meaning.
# In tennis news:
Serena Williams’ Wimbledon comeback is over after the American legend pulled out of the doubles due to a knee injury on Saturday. Williams and her sister Venus were due to play in the first round on Saturday, but Serena announced just hours before the match that her knee had not healed enough to play. That was her first singles match since the 2022 US Open after four years in retirement.
Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek’s Wimbledon title defence was ended by the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala in a third-round shock on Saturday. Swiatek slipped to a 7-6, 6-2 defeat on Centre Court as 29th seed Eala reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. The left-hander, who had only won one match at a Slam before this week, will face former Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini on Monday. It is six-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek’s earliest exit from a major tournament since another third-round defeat, by Yulia Putintseva, at Wimbledon two years ago.
# And finally: The City of Cape Town is appealing to residents for information after infrastructure along the Princess Vlei trail was vandalised just three weeks after the official opening. A group of suspects removed wooden slats from one of the footbridges along the 4.23-kilometre circulatory trail. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says the City has invested 10.2-million-rand in the circulatory trail and is working in partnership with the Princess Vlei Forum and local communities:
