# POPCRU says corporal punishment has no place in a democratic correctional system
# Tennis: The defending champion Barbora Krejčíková is in tears after being knocked out at Wimbledon
# And finally, Ozzy Osbourne says goodbye
# The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union says it rejects in the strongest terms the notion of using violence as a tool of correction at correctional facilities. POPCRU spokesperson, Richard Mamabolo, says this after the minister of Correctional Services, Pieter Groenewald, called for the reintroduction of corporal punishment in the correctional centres. He says the proposal is not only unconstitutional, but dangerous, reckless, and a direct violation of human rights and international correctional standards:
# The Western Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre remains on high alert as severe weather conditions persist across the province. The South African Weather Service has confirmed continued forecasts for cold, wet, and windy conditions with rainfall of ten to 20-millimetres expected in various areas, especially in mountainous regions. The Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Department’s spokesperson, Wouter Kriel, says significant impacts have been recorded in the City of Cape Town:
# Australia’s prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has promised strong action following an apparent arson attack on a synagogue in Melbourne. Police are looking for a man who poured liquid on the synagogue’s front door before setting it on fire on Friday night. Some 20 people having dinner inside were evacuated without any injuries. Police are also trying to determine if the incident is linked to an attack against a Jewish-owned restaurant in the city on the same night. A number of antisemitic attacks have occurred in Australia recently, sparked by tensions over the Israel-Hamas war.
# Sports news:
# Rugby: British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell admitted to some frustration after his team’s 21-10 win against the Waratahs on Saturday, but said his side would learn from it. The Lions struggled to adjust to the style of the Waratahs, despite the home side missing a host of key players who are on duty for Australia’s match against Fiji today. They are facing Australia’s top-ranked Super Rugby side, the Brumbies, in Canberra on Wednesday in the fourth game of their tour. They play three tests against Australia, starting in Brisbane on July 19.
# And tennis: Barbora Krejčíková’s reign as Wimbledon champion came to a tearful end on Saturday as the Czech slumped to a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat against American tenth seed Emma Navarro. Krejčíková appeared to be struggling with injury in the closing stages and wept on Court One as Navarro took advantage to cause the latest upset in the women’s tournament following the exits of five of the top six seeds. The two-time Grand Slam champion has endured a difficult time since defeating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon final last year.
# And finally: Ozzy Osbourne has reunited with Black Sabbath and performed his final gig in an emotional but truly metal goodbye. Back To The Beginning at Villa Park stadium was billed as the “final bow” for the man revered as a founder of heavy metal after several years of health problems, including Parkinson’s disease. Joining him on stage were hard rock celebrities such as Metallica and Steven Tyler, while tributes from friends and other celebrities were played on screen. Black Sabbath was one of the most successful metal bands of all time, selling more than 75-million albums worldwide.
