BULLETIN 5 July 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The government calls for immunisation against measles
# Five people, including a police officer, are killed in an accident in KwaZulu-Natal
# And Donald Trump celebrates his bill with fireworks and a flyover
# Government is calling on all parents and caregivers to make sure children are fully immunised against the dangerous and highly contagious measles virus. Government says so far this year, 379 laboratory-confirmed measles cases and 409 rubella cases were reported by the Measles Reference Laboratory at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa. Spokesperson Nokululeko Mtshali says vaccination is the best protection against harmful diseases:
Meanwhile, the DA in Limpopo says failure to regularly test water at schools could lead to another bilharzia outbreak like the one experienced last year. The party has called on Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya to prioritise water quality testing and partner with municipalities to ensure that learners have access to clean, safe water. The DA’s Jacques Smalle says WaterCAN’s findings indicate that 43-percent of water samples from schools nationally are unsafe for drinking:
# Five people, including a police officer, were killed last night when a Polo and a minibus taxi collided along the N3 Toll Route, just after the Marrianhill Toll Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal. The provincial Department of Transport’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, says a minibus taxi carrying 17 passengers travelling to Ixopo veered off the road and rolled 50 meters down the embankment. He says twelve passengers sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital:
# After weeks of sweet-talking Republicans into backing his domestic mega-bill, US president Donald Trump on Friday signed into law the legislation, which he calls “the biggest bill of its type in history”. It happened despite concerns about Medicaid cuts, deficit expansion, and political pitfalls. Trump turned the traditional July 4 picnic into a celebration of the country’s independence and the most decisive legislative victory of his second term. The festivities included a bomber jet flyover, as a nod to the military’s recent strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, as well as a fireworks display.
# And finally sports news:
# Cycling: Two-time champion Jonas Vingegaard says he is feeling confident of winning another Tour de France. Cycling’s greatest race also features what may be one of sport’s greatest rivalries, as the softly spoken Vingegaard vies with defending champion Tadej Pogacar, who has more of a swashbuckling style. Slovenian Pogacar attacks at the slightest provocation, whereas the Dane tends to stick to a carefully plotted plan. The pair have won the past five Tour de France between them, and the 112th edition gets underway today from the northern city of Lille.
# And tennis: Carlos Alcaraz battled past Jan-Lennard Struff in a four-set encounter to reach the Wimbledon last 16 on Friday. He will be up against Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the fourth round. In the women’s section, top seed Aryna Sabalenka managed to beat Brittain’s Emma Raducanu. Sabalenka is a three-time Grand Slam champion but has never been beyond the semifinals at Wimbledon. Earlier on Friday, the Australian Open champion and sixth seed Madison Keys joined the mass exodus of top seeds after losing to Germany’s Laura Siegemund.
