# UDM leader Bantu Holomisa is calling for a joint investigative committee between South Africa and the US to probe the origins, intent, and credibility of claims of a white genocide in South Africa. US president Donald Trump has claimed that there is a genocide against the country’s white farmers, which the government has strongly denied. Holomisa told Newzroom Afrika there is a risk that these claims can be manipulated for political or economic agendas:
# A bus accident claimed the lives of three people and left 12 others injured on the R102 near Maidstone Sugar Mill in the Tongaat area in KwaZulu-Natal this morning. According to authorities, the fully-laden bus veered off the Tongaat River bridge, killing two men and a woman. The provincial Transport Department’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, says an investigation into the accident will be conducted by the relevant authorities:
# Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero has allegedly buried reports which shows that City Power has been hampering the metro’s ability to provide services for years. According to News24, the reports show that as of 30th September last year, City Power had a 16.3-billion-rand negative bank balance. According to the Auditor General, the power utility made a 2.8-billion-rand net loss in the 12-months ending on the 30th of June 2024. The metro’s Nthatisi Modingoane says these claims are false and misleading, adding that they are fully committed to transparency and accountability.
# The United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees is warning that the trickle of supplies being allowed into war-torn Gaza will not halt famine. It is estimated that 500-thousand people face starvation in the enclave. Israel has intensified its military operation in northern Gaza against Hamas, killing at least 50 people in air strikes in recent days. UNRWA’s Juliette Touma says just over 300 aid trucks have entered Gaza since last Monday, which is not enough:
# Motorsport: Thailand plans on bidding to host a Formula One race by 2028. Prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held her latest talks with motorsport bosses at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. A bid and feasibility proposal will be submitted to the Thai cabinet for approval next week. Plans for a Thai Grand Prix, most likely run as a street race in the capital of Bangkok, have been under serious discussion for more than a year.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-86-cents and the euro at 20-rand-31-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-21-cents and Bitcoin trades at 109-thousand-137-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-303-dollars-51-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-9-cents a barrel.
