Spokesperson Newton Masuku says Communications and Digital Technologies minister, Solly Malatjie announced that government will ease the 30-percent BBBEE requirement to facilitate the entry of Elon Musk’s Starlink into the South African market. He says what was presented by president Cyril Ramaphosa and his delegation has now been unmasked as a covert operation to surrender South Africa’s to the global billionaire elite:
# Trade, Industry and Competition deputy minister, Andrew Whitfield, says South Africa’s exports under the African Continental Free Trade Area have surged to 820-million-rand since preferential trade began in January 2024. Key exports include mining gear, food, and electronics, with top destinations like Ghana, Kenya, and Egypt. Whitfield says imports under the same agreement reached 610-million-rand. While 48 tariff schedules have been adopted, he stresses the need to tackle non-tariff barriers and fast-track full implementation across the continent.
# Billy Joel’s upcoming tour dates have been cancelled with the legendary performer getting treatment for normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition that affects the brain. According to a statement on his Instagram page, Joel’s condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance. He is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing. Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is a rare condition” that occurs when a person has too much fluid in the brain.
# Tennis: World number one Aryna Sabalenka says she is feeling stronger than ever as she targets a fourth Grand Slam title and first on clay at the French Open. The top seed from Belarus arrives in Paris after winning a third title on clay in Madrid and reaching the quarter-finals at the Italian Open in Rome. Last year, an out-of-sorts Sabalenka was shocked by Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals in Paris. She is taking no chances as she opens her campaign tomorrow against 75th-ranked Russian Kamilla Rakhimova.
# And finally, Cricket: Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes substitutes coming on during the first innings of a Test should be allowed to bat and bowl instead of being restricted to fielding. Zimbabwe’s frontline seamer, Richard Ngarava, was injured after bowling only nine overs in the one-off Test against England at Trent Bridge on Thursday. That led to the hosts’ top three batters all scoring centuries. Vaughan says if there’s a genuine injury in the first innings, the limitation is detrimental to fans paying money to watch.
