# Eskom says it does not anticipate the implementation of load-shedding during this winter season if unplanned outages remain below 13-thousand-megawatts. On Monday, Eskom presented its Winter Outlook for the period ending 31 August and it remains in effect. Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena says if outages increase to 15-thousand-megawatts, load-shedding would be limited to a maximum of 21 days out of 153 days at Stage 2:
# The City of Cape Town says the wet conditions are expected to continue in the Western Cape for the rest of the day. The South African Weather Service issued a level 4 weather warning for damaging winds and waves for the province associated with a cold front this weekend. The city’s traffic spokesperson, Kevin Jacobs says there are currently no weather-related road closures:
Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town’s Department of Community, Arts and Culture Development will provide goods and services valued at 1.2-million-rand to ten shelters this winter to help them cope with the increased demand for their services. The one-million-rand budget will go towards acquiring and distributing essentials like blankets, mattresses, food items, hygiene items and cleaning aids to qualifying shelters. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says 230-thousand-rand will assist shelters with temporary staffing:
# Pakistan said India launched missiles at key military bases, including a base close to the capital of Islamabad. Pakistan’s military said it had launched an operation against India in retaliation to those latest strikes. The rapid escalation of tension between the neighbouring states was sparked by the massacre of tourists last month in Indian-controlled Kashmir. In response, India said it was targeting terrorist infrastructure in both Pakistan and Kashmir. Both sides have since accused each other of taking escalatory steps, including firing drones and missiles at each other despite calls for restraint from the international community.
# Tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner will make his comeback from a three-month doping ban today when he takes on Mariano Navone in front of a partisan crowd at the Foro Italico. Yesterday Carlos Alcaraz kicked off his bid for a first Italian Open title by cruising past Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-3 in Rome. In his return to action following a thigh injury suffered in his Barcelona Open final defeat to Holger Rune last month, the Spaniard showed some signs of ring rustiness with 22 unforced errors.
And in the women’s game, Coco Gauff survived a scare at this year’s Italian Open, coming back from a set down to beat qualifier Victoria Mboko 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. The world number three will now play Magda Linette in the third round in Rome. Earlier the current world number one Aryna Sabalenka swept past Russia’s Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour. Sabalenka will play Sofia Kenin in the next round after the American beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. The 27-year-old Sabalenka has reached the final of her last four tournaments, winning both in Madrid and Miami.
