BULLETIN 2 May 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The GOOD Party is urging Godongwana not to renege on his commitment to social spending
# President Trump has fired national security adviser Mike Waltz
# And soccer: the English FA is banning transgender women from the game in England
# The GOOD Party is calling on Finance minister Enoch Godongwana not to renege on his commitment to social spending. This as the minister is set to table the national budget for the third time on May 21st, following two failed instances given inter-party conflict regarding the now recalled value-added tax hike. GOOD’s secretary general, Brett Herron, says social expenditure is not a luxury, nor a political favour, but a constitutional obligation:
# The Department of Correctional Services national commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, says the department is planning to install more cameras at all correctional services centres across the country. The death of inmate Quinton Fortuin who was injured at Goodwood Correctional Centre in Cape Town while fighting with the correctional officials led to plans to install cameras. Thobakgale says the installation of more cameras will help in covering all the spots in the correctional facilities:
# ActionSA says it is concerned about the posture taken by the City of Johannesburg executive to address the metro’s financial crisis. The executive is out looking for funding from foreign banking institutions, including the African Development Bank and the International Finance Corporation. ActionSA’s, Elmari Atterbury, says that in January, the council approved a loan of 2.8-billion-rand, however, three months later, the executive is pleading with the council to approve another loan to the value of 700-million-rand:
# US president Donald Trump has removed Mike Waltz from his post as national security adviser. Waltz has faced criticism since March, after acknowledging that he inadvertently added a journalist to a Signal group chat that shared sensitive information about US missile strikes. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that he would nominate Waltz as ambassador to the United Nations. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has taken on the job of the national security adviser on an interim basis.
# Soccer: The English Football Association has confirmed that transgender women will no longer be able to play in the women’s game in England from June 1st. This follows the UK Supreme Court’s ruling that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex. The FA says it understands that this decision will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify. About 20 transgender women have been playing in English grassroots games this season.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-43-cents and the euro at 20-rand-87-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-53-cents and Bitcoin trades at 96-thousand-738-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-252-dollars-88-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-16-cents a barrel.
