# The UDM calls on all South Africans to recommit to building a country that reflects dreams of 1994
# PSA calls for protection of SA’s freedoms and pursuit of economic self-reliance
# And soccer: Liverpool could be crowned Premier League champions later today
# The UDM is calling on all South Africans to recommit to building a country that reflects the dreams of 1994, a South Africa that is just, fair, and free. The UDM acting secretary-general, Zandile Phiri says true freedom must be measured by the dignity and well-being of all peoples. She says it means a functioning state that delivers on its promises, that protects the vulnerable, and that holds officials accountable when they fail:
And on Freedom Day the Public Servants Association is calling on the government to safeguard the hard-fought gains that are the foundation of the country’s democracy. The association’s, Claude Naiker, says true freedom, apart from political rights, entails ensuring that every South African has access to economic opportunities, quality public services, and a dignified livelihood:
# The ANC says it notes the public apology and correction issued by Police minister Senzo Mchunu concerning the Bergview College case in Matatiele, Eastern Cape. The minister has apologised to the school’s principal, Jaco Pieters, for implicating him as a possible suspect in the rape of a minor that became national news. The ANC says it is still calling for justice for the survivor, urgent and ethical law enforcement, and a united fight against gender-based violence and femicide.
# Mixed Martial Arts: Cameron Saaiman, Dricus du Plessis’ teammate, suffered a brutal knock-out just two minutes into his fight against newcomer, Malcolm Wellmaker at the UFC in Kansas City last night. Saaiman has lost two fights in a row in disappointing fashion, setting him back a few steps, and he was hoping to get back to winning ways against Wellmaker. But a huge right hook knock-out blow sent Saaiman to the canvas, putting paid to Saaiman’s plans.
# And Soccer: Liverpool manager Arne Slot says his team knows the big responsibility they have in securing the club’s 20th top-flight title. With four games remaining, the Reds need just one point against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield today to be crowned Premier League champions for the 2024/2025 season. Liverpool last secured the title in the 2019-2020 season under former manager Jurgen Klopp. Slot says they won’t celebrate prematurely, as they still have a job to do:
