In this bulletin:
# The ANC’s National Working Committee will meet today over the government of national unity
# Labour unions want to hold a nationwide protest against the Labour Relations Act
# And ten Britons are accused of committing war crimes in Gaza
# The ANC’s National Working Committee is meeting today to discuss the way forward regarding the government of national unity. The relationship between the two biggest parties in the coalition government, the ANC and the DA, has been strained after the DA voted against the adoption of the fiscal framework last week. Deputy president Paul Mashatile says the DA’s role in the coalition government should not be exaggerated, adding that all parties should work together in terms of the statement of intent.
The South African Communist Party meanwhile reiterated its call for the DA to be removed from the government of national unity. SACP’s secretary-general, Solly Mapaila, says the DA has arrogantly insisted that there can be no government in the country without its inclusion, which is false. He adds a new government could be formed without the DA:
# Several labour unions across South Africa have planned a nationwide protests against proposed amendments to the Labour Relations Act. Giwusa president Mametlwe Sebei warns these changes could weaken workers’ rights by restricting the right to strike and allowing dismissals without proper disciplinary procedures. He emphasises that such amendments may enable employers to act with impunity, undermining protections established in the Labour Law:
# The UK’s Met police is set to receive a war crimes complaint against ten Britons who served with the Israeli military in Gaza. The 240-page report alleges the men were involved in targeted killings of civilians and aid workers. One of the UK’s leading human rights lawyers, Michael Mansfield, told The Guardian that British nationals are under a legal obligation not to collude with crimes committed in Palestine. He says each of the crimes attributed to the ten men amounts to war crimes or crimes against humanity.
# Tennis: Four-time Grand Slam champion, Carlos Alcaraz, says he is happy with the way he is playing so far this season. This is despite the Spaniard losing in the semifinals in Indian Wells and suffering a surprising opening-round exit in Miami. The European clay swing begins with the Monte-Carlo Masters this week. Alcaraz says he is feeling good and is looking forward to playing well in Monte-Carlo:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 19-rand-30-cents and the euro at 20-rand-31-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-96-cents and Bitcoin trades at 75-thousand-163-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-and-14-dollars-86-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-47-cents a barrel.
