# The Pan-African Parliament says the unrest in Mozambique poses significant risks to neighbouring countries
# And golf: The world number one withdraws from The Sentry with a hand injury
# Fuel prices will increase on New Year’s Day. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has announced an increase of 19-cents per litre in the price of 93-octane petrol, and 12-cents for 95-octane. Diesel will go up by between 7.5 and 10.5-cents per litre, and the price of LP gas will increase by 13-cents per kilogram. Illuminating paraffin will cost 13-cents less per litre. The department says the increase in fuel prices is attributed to higher international petroleum prices, and the weaker rand.
# The Save South Africa Civic Movement says the country is losing the fight against gender-based violence, simply because government does not have a clear strategy in dealing with the issue. Spokesperson Tebogo Mashilompane says GBV must first be understood to mean gender-based violence in the true sense of the word. He says there is a serious problem because in South Africa the perpetrators are mostly men:
# The Pan-African Parliament’s Southern Caucus chair, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, is urging all political parties, civil society, and stakeholders in Mozambique to commit to an inclusive, transparent mediation process, that places the aspirations of the people at its core. Caucus spokesperson Moshe Semenya says such a process must allow the people of Mozambique to choose impartial and trusted mediators who can guide the nation towards reconciliation, peace and stability after the unrest that followed the disputed elections:
# Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler will miss next month’s The Sentry tournament in Kapalua, Hawaii, after sustaining a freak injury. He cut his right hand with a broken glass while preparing dinner on Christmas Day, and had to undergo an operation to remove the glass fragments. Scheffler is expected to be out of action for two to three weeks. The field for the tournament includes four FedExCup champions, 31 PGA Tour tournament winners and 29 players inside the top 50 of this year’s FedExCup standings.
# And finally, cancer was revealed as the cause of death of 73-year-old British actress Olivia Hussey, who shot to fame in the 1968 version of the classic Shakespeare tale “Romeo and Juliet”. Hussey and Leonard Whiting played the lead roles in Franco Zeffirelli’s award-winning film about the tragic love story of two Italian teenagers from feuding families. She won a Golden Globe. Hussey and Whiting unsuccessfully sued Paramount Pictures decades later for sexual abuse because they were only 15 and 16 respectively when they appeared in a nude scene.
