# Eskom says the recovery plan has resulted in year-on-year diesel savings of 16.99-billion-rand, approximately 70-percent less than the 24.27-billion-rand spent during the same period last year. Eskom’s Daphne Mokwena says the power utility strategic use of peaking stations, including pumped storage and Open-Cycle Gas Turbines, remains key in managing electricity demand during peak times, particularly during evening peaks from 5pm to ten at night:
# The ANC Youth League has condemned the government’s decision to allow Chris Hani’s murderer Janusz Waluś to escape South Africa and avoid the full consequences of his actions. The league says Waluś crime was committed on South African soil, and he must face justice in the country. It says if the government continues to fail to act, then the people of South Africa must take matters into their own hands. The party says he should be handed over to the South African people to determine his fate.
# The City of Cape Town raided an abandoned building in Dunoon yesterday after receiving a tip-off about an illegal liquor manufacturing operation in the area. Upon investigation they found various filled, sealed bottles resembling whiskey and gin. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith says no suspects were found at the premises and an enquiry docket is to be registered by the police:
# TikTok’s bid to overturn a law which would see it banned or sold in the US from early 2025 has been rejected. The social media company had hoped a federal appeals court would agree that the law was unconstitutional because it represented a “staggering” impact on the free speech of its 170-million US users. TikTok says it will now take its fight to the US Supreme Court. The US wants TikTok sold or banned because of what it says are its owners’ links to the Chinese state.
# And athletics: Australian teenage sprinting sensation Gout Gout recorded the fourth-fastest under-18 100-metre time in history, clocking in at 10.04 seconds at the All-Schools Athletics Championships in Queensland. The run was wind-assisted, but he later ran a legal 10.17 in the final to beat his personal best and the previous Australian under-18 record. Gout broke onto the scene in 2022 when he ran the 100-metres in 10.57 seconds as a 14-year-old. The last two years have seen the Australian drew comparisons to sprinting great Usain Bolt.
