# President Cyril Ramaphosa has highlighted South Africa’s lagging entrepreneurship rates, with only ten-percent planning startups, the lowest in 20 years. Speaking at the Presidential Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Cooperatives Awards, Ramaphosa emphasised that while Africa thrives in entrepreneurial activity, there is a need to support entrepreneurs through funding, regulatory reforms, and training. He said that doubling entrepreneurship is crucial for job creation:
# The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund has welcomed the declaration of food-borne illnesses as a national disaster, following at least 22 child deaths nationwide. CEO Linda Ncube-Nkomo called for urgent government action, including closing non-compliant spaza shops and enforcing food safety standards. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, she emphasised the need for collaboration to protect public health and prevent further tragedies:
# President-elect Donald Trump yesterday named former NFL player and White House official Scott Turner to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. If confirmed by the Senate, Turner would lead an agency that enforces fair housing laws, administers mortgage insurance to prospective homeowners and gives rental subsidies to lower-income families. Turner was closely involved with the America First Policy Institute, that has helped develop the president-elect’s agenda. He grew up in Texas and spent nine years in the NFL.
# Golf: Wynand Dingle held on to his lead in the South African PGA Championship at St Francis Links on Friday and heads into the weekend determined to put his intense hard work over the past few months to good use. Dingle signed for a second round of 68 to lead the field on 11 under par. He is one stroke clear of Barend Botha and multiple Sunshine Tour winner Rourke van der Spuy. Dingle says he hopes to add his name to the list of winners on the prestigious trophy.
# And the University of the Free State has appointed renowned academic Hester Klopper as its new vice-chancellor and principal. Klopper, currently deputy vice-chancellor at Stellenbosch University, brings over 30 years of leadership in academia and non-governmental organisations, along with expertise in strategy, innovation, and global engagement. She will succeed acting vice-chancellor Anthea Rhoda. Klopper said she is honoured to lead the university and is committed to fostering inclusivity, and innovation, and advancing the institution’s Vision 130 goals.
