# SAHPRA suspects a syndicate is behind Gauteng’s illegal medicine sales
# Minister Majodina celebrates major progress on the R20-billion lower uMkhomazi water scheme
# And, rugby: The Boks top the world rankings for now as the All Blacks beat Ireland
# The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority suspects a criminal syndicate is behind illegal medicine sales in Gauteng. This comes as the Gauteng Health Department warns shops against selling scheduled medications without a license, citing public health risks. SAHPRA spokesperson, Mokgadi Fafudi, told Newzroom Afrika that only licensed pharmacies and authorised healthcare professionals can legally dispense medication to ensure community safety:
# Water and Sanitation minister Pemmy Majodina has commended the advancements in the 20-billion-rand lower uMkhomazi bulk water supply scheme in KwaZulu-Natal. The scheme aims to improve water access for 50-thousand households in the eThekwini and Ugu districts. Ministry spokesperson Cornelius Monama says the project, now 60-percent complete at major sites, is expected to boost long-term water security for over five-million residents, creating jobs for 380 people and participation of over 100 small businesses:
# The United Nations Human Rights Office says nearly 70-percent of the fatalities it has verified in the Gaza war were women and children. It condemns what it calls a systematic violation of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law. The UN tally since the start of the war, in which Israel’s military is fighting Hamas militants, includes only fatalities it has managed to verify with three sources, and the counting continues.
# Rugby: New Zealand have knocked Ireland off the top of the World Rugby rankings following their emphatic 23-13 victory at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin last night. This means South Africa moves back to the top spot for now, with the All Blacks second and Ireland third. The World Rugby rankings are only officially updated on Monday but, as things stand for now, South Africa with 91.77 points are first, New Zealand on 91.21 second, and Ireland with 90.58 are third. However, the ranking could change again should the Boks lose against Scotland tomorrow at Murrayfield.
And, South Africans attending the Test in Edinburgh will believe they’re at home when they are greeted with the aroma of boerewors on the braai. South African butcher Markus Homola has been living his dream in the Scottish capital in his shop, John Brash Family Butcher, just round the corner from Murrayfield. Homola emigrated to the UK in 2009 and bought the shop from Brash in 2019. He says it keeps him connected to the country he misses so much.
