# Former president Thabo Mbeki says the ANC need to strengthen its position on foreign policy matters and addressing emerging challenges. Mbeki was speaking during the ANC subcommittee on international relations retreat on global engagement and foreign policy in Kempton Park. The subcommittee will ensure the party’s positions are consistent with the historic, political and ideological ideals of the movement. He says the subcommittee retreat is ending today:
# The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa says its strongly urges the National Energy Regulator to reject Eskom’s proposed tariff increase. Giwusa president Mametlwe Sebei says the union made the submission regarding Eskom’s Nersa application for a proposed 36.15-percent tariff increase for 2025. He says the recent tariff hike in April 2024 has already placed immense pressure on residents, many of whom are struggling to cope:
# Sixteen people were injured when a tourist train operated by the Ceres Rail Company came to an abrupt stop as it tried to avoid a collision with nine stationary Transnet cargo carriages at the Cape Town port. The company said the incident happened due to incorrectly set track points. The sudden halt resulted in passengers thrown forward as doors and cabin furniture shifted abruptly. Emergency services responded promptly to assist the injured. The company says it is working with Transnet Freight Rail to determine the cause of the incident.
# Donald Trump Junior slammed the media at a Republican campaign event in Arizona. He was speaking alongside JD Vance at an ammunition manufacturer in Scottsdale, where the son of the former president called the press “full-on propaganda”. He said whatever disdain people have for the media, it is not enough. Donald Trump announced he had sued CBS on Thursday, alleging the network’s editing of a recent 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris was “deceitful”. The network called Trump’s claims “completely without merit.”
# And, tennis: Germany’s Alexander Zverev out-served Holger Rune in the semifinals of the Paris Masters yesterday to book his place in the final for the first time since losing to Daniil Medvedev in 2020. Zverev’s 6-3, 7-6 win against the Dane sent the 27-year-old to his second ATP 1000-level final of the season — after his victory in Rome in May. The world number three will face Frenchman Ugo Humbert in today’s final. Humbert beat the Russian Karen Khachanov 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, in the second semi-final.
